Natural State Wildflower Byways

posted by Chuck Dovish on 17 Mar 2010

Now that spring has sprung -- and will be blossoming into all its glory...I need to tell you about the Highway Department Wildflower program. Yes, their job never ends you know -- in February they had to clear all the ice and snow...and now they have to plant wildflowers of all things !  Ahh, but it's well-worth it !  Crimson and clover....crimson and clover.....oops !  Sorry, daydreamed off their for a sec. Anyway...yes, this is about the coolest thing the Highway Department has come up with in awhile, other than those info signs that you see as well --and the orange barrels -- can never have enough of those.

My Favorite Winter Getaways

posted by Chuck Dovish on 04 Jan 2010

Now that the snow is finally flying in the air and is sticking to the ground in some areas...it's time to venture out to one of the Natural State's magnificent winter weekend getaways.  Here are a few of my favorites while Exploring Arkansas.

Autumn In Arkansas

posted by Chuck Dovish on 21 Oct 2009

From all indications, autumn in Arkansas this year should be a good one.  All the ingredients thus far are there -- crisp, cool nights and warm, sunny days which are allowing leaves to do their thing.  Yes, to do their thing. If you want a more scientific explanation of leaves changing color..you'll have to go elsewhere.  Sorry, I'm not a botanist or scientist -- I only explore Arkansas.  One of the best ways to experience Arkansas's autumn splendor is by taking one of the many designated scenic drives throughout the state.

9/27 Kickoff (and I don't mean football)

First of all a great big "thank you" for all of you who made it to our Meet Me In The Park at Hot Springs Saturday -- Park estimate was 3500 in attendance for that event !! Unbelievable ! So now, the big day the Big Show is almost upon us -- the premiere of the Ken Burns film -- "The National Parks - America's Best Idea" -- this Sunday, the 27th at 7pm. You DO NOT want to miss it !!

My First Arkansas watermelon of the Year

posted by Unknown on 24 Jul 2009

I just got my first Arkansas watermelon of the year this week. Now, I love watermelon. I don't just eat a few dainty bites. I can devour up half of a 30 pound watermelon in one setting. Just cut that melon in half, sprinkle a little salt on top, grab a spoon and YUM!

Meet Me -- seriously, in real life -- in the Park

Join AETN in Arkansas's parks this summer, and rediscover your Natural State! It's time for your very own Arkansas adventure. Oh, and yeah, I'll really be there, along with other great members of the AETN team.

Mid July Rains are a Wonderful Thing

posted by Unknown on 14 Jul 2009

We have had about 1 1/2" of rain in the past two days! The garden is smilin', the flowers are smilin', the yard is smilin', the trees are smilin' and Phyllis is smilin'. Sharing a mountain top with lots of trees makes us moisture challenged and it is a good day when we don't have to haul water for the garden and flowers. Today is a GOOD DAY!

Smackover

One of the great things about working on Arkansas Outdoors for the past 17 years has been the ability to travel to all sections of our state again. I say again because for Phyllis and me both its more like nostalgia than discovery. You see, her full time job with the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission has afforded her wide travel as did my years with the University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service. So many beautiful things to see here; so many great stories.
