“Freedom Summer” Screening at Little Rock Juneteenth Celebration

Join us, Mosaic Templars Cultural Center and the UALR Institute on Race and Ethnicity for  a free preview screening of “American Experience: Freedom Summer” as part of the Mosaic Templars Cultural Center Juneteenth celebration on Saturday, June 21, at 1 p.m.

“Freedom Summer” is a powerful documentary from award-winning filmmaker Stanley Nelson (“Freedom Riders,” “The Murder of Emmett Till”), and recognizes an important and often overlooked mile-marker in the growth of our nation’s civil rights.

In our 50-minute preview of the film, you’ll hear the harrowing, inspirational story of 10 hot and deadly weeks during the summer of 1064. During this period, more than 700 student volunteers joined with organizers and local African Americans in a historic effort to shatter the fountains of white supremacy in the nation’s most segregated state - Mississippi.

With the nation’s eyes rived on their efforts, these dedicated volunteers worked together to canvas for voter registration, create Freedom Schools and establish the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party, with the goal of challenging the segregationist state Democratic Party at the national convention in Atlantic City. From the beginning, the campaign was marked by sustained, deadly violence, including the notorious murders of three civil rights workers, countless beatings, the burning of 35 churches, and the bombing of 70 homes and Freedom Houses.

We’ll hold this screening with our partners in the third-floor auditorium of the Mosaic Templars Cultural Center and follow the film with the UALR Institute on Race and Ethnicity’s panel discussion about the 50th anniversary of the voter registration efforts. Panel members include Dr. T. Elon Dancy, Judge Wendell Griffen and Dr. Ravi Perry. While you can drop in at any point, seating is limited. The Institute on Race and Ethnicity is kindly providing an RSVP option to make sure your space is reserved here

While you’re in the neighborhood for the screening, don’t miss the wide range of family-friendly events and activities celebrating the freedom and rich history and culture of African Americans in Arkansas at the Mosaic Templars Cultural Society street festival! They have a full schedule of events and information about the history of Juneteenth in Arkansas and across the nation at mosaictemplars.com/juneteenth.
