Kids Eat Smart with Whole Foods® - you’re in charge!

Want more ideas about what to pack in those school lunches?  Tired of pulling your hair out trying to get more greens in your kindergartener?  PBS Kids has partnered with Whole Foods Markets® to tell you and your kids why organic matters. Even more important? This partnership is working to help families learn more about healthy eating habits with the “Fantastic Organic” campaign!

You are in such luck I can’t stand it.  Whole Foods in Little Rock is our partner in crime (or in food) and happens to be in the biz of offering the kind of yummy stuff we want (and should be) bombarding our kiddies’ little bodies with.  Instead of trips to the doctor and tiny plastic cup fulls of icky brightly colored medicine, let’s keep them healthy with the earth’s natural remedy:  fruits and veggies.  

But my kid won’t eat it!  What do I DO you say?  I say this with all the love and truth in my happy (and healthy – thank you bananas and soy) heart:  He or she WILL eat it and YOU can figure out how to make that happen – with AETN and Whole Foods by your side.   I am no official authority of any sort on food.  I do, however refer to those who are and have seen the results I get personally with my family.  I read.  I pay attention to labels.  I only purchase food that affects our bodies in a healthy way.  

I have one critter (8 years old) who sneaks through the kitchen and eats raw sprouts by the handful (they are light and crunchy and cool looking) hoping I won’t catch him and another little sweet pea (6 years old) who passes up sugary stuff for half an avocado.  I no lie to you – promise!  We bought our own sprout growing kit recently, they help water and check often to see the progress, and then they crunch and munch very proudly 3 days later when they are ‘sprouted’.  I keep all natural dye-free lollipops and they beg for one (ok, like 5) when they want a treat. “Mommy, can I have a healthy sucker?”  I let them choose their vegetable and fruit for school lunch – the choice is which one of each you get – it’s not a matter of not getting one.  I told them years ago that carrots make you see better so that the elusive soccer ball goes in the goal - and shazam, down goes the bowl of crunchy orange sticks.  Food at my house is about how to use it to nourish your body so you can do the things you want to do and grow up strong…it’s not a sugary reward or based on the ‘live to eat’ motto.  It’s eating to live. 

“Fantastic Organic” uses online resources from PBS Parents, PBS Kids, and Whole Foods Market to help families learn to cook, shop and explore organic foods together. These fun, easy-to-use tools and educational resources are designed to help families make educated decisions about organic foods and encourage healthy lifestyles.

Online, you and your kids can explore exactly what organics are at pbsparents.org/fantasticorganic. On top of educational illustrations and animated shorts, the website features excellent recipes and tips for making simple, healthy organic meals and snacks, as well as shopping tips and interactive kids’ activities that give parents a hand when it comes to encourage little ones’ healthy eating habits.
