AETN Exploration Wednesdays – Bears and Fabric of the Cosmos
Posted on 11 Jul 2012
At 7 p.m., “Nature” invites you to join ecologist Chris Morgan and filmmaker Joe Pontecorvo for the first episode of an incredible Alaskan adventure in “Bears of the Last Frontier: City of Bears.” The three-part series introduces you to all three of North America’s bear species – from three hundred pound black bears to polar bears and brown bears that weigh well over half a ton! To encounter these impressive creatures, you’ll journey across the Alaskan wilderness (roughly the size of California, Texas and Montana combined) to explore the area’s five major ecosystems. From the continent’s highest mountain to vast glaciers and immense forests, you’ll see exactly how well adapted each area’s bears have adjusted to their overwhelming surroundings. Begin by allowing the largest concentration of grizzlies in the world to come to you as Chris and Joe set up camp in the heart of the wilderness to observe exciting and touching encounters between Alaska’s brown bears.
After leaving Alaska, you’ll accompany physicist and acclaimed author Brian Greene on a mind-bending reality check as you traverse the frontiers of physics and learn how scientists are piecing together the newest and most complete picture of space, time and the universe. While to many of us space is “nothing,” an empty void, space is anything but what it seems. The fabric of space stretches, twists warps and ripples, thanks largely to a newly discovered ingredient that makes up 70 percent of the universe. Learn more about dark energy – and the endless mysteries its existence creates – in “NOVA – Fabric of the Cosmos: What Is Space?” at 8 p.m.
