In fact, we’d love to see you at every screening! Each special screening and community panel discussion will be held at Fayetteville Public Library (401 W. Mountain St.) on Sundays from 2-4 p.m. And we’re ready to hear from you!

Community Cinema, produced by the Independent Television Service, features sneak peeks and special community screenings of films broadcasted on the award-winning PBS series “Independent Lens.” And these exciting films are designed to inspire discussion and action! After each screening (generally held on a monthly basis), a discussion with leading community-based organizations, special guest speakers, interactive workshops, local resources and other programming is held to help you learn more about the topics and to find out how you can get involved in your community!

This season, Community Cinema is taking on controversial issues from current news headlines through films like this month’s “As Goes Janesville.” In this special screening, you’ll see a three-year chronicle about the debate of the future of America’s middle class. You’ll also hear from community representatives about what these issues mean for Fayetteville, northwest Arkansas and our state as a whole. Panelists speaking this month will include Dr. Margaret Reid, professor and chair of political science at the University of Arkansas; Chung Tan, manager of economic development for Fayetteville; and Susanna Brinnon, resource support specialist for the Arkansas Workforce Center.

Upcoming films also include “Love Free or Die,” a portrait of Gene Robinson – the first openly gay elected bishop in the high church traditions of Christendom, and “Soul Food Junkies,” a thoughtful look into the black community’s love affair with soul food, the dishes’ significance and their health consequences.

ITVS’s Community Cinema series also continues to align its programming with the Women and Girls Lead initiative – a multiyear public media initiative to focus, educate and connect citizens worldwide in support of the issues facing women and girls. Three upcoming programs focusing on gender equity and women and girls leadership will be featured this season, including “Solar Mamas,” “Wonder Women: The Untold Story of American Superheroines” and “The Revolutionary Optimists.”
