Producer Mark Wilcken Announces "Champion Trees" Documentary

Posted on 15 Feb 2013

One of the hottest days last year was July 26, 2012. It was a scorching 103 degrees as Cinematographer Gabe Mayhan and AETN Producer Mark Wilcken ventured to the Arkansas State Veterans Cemetery in Birdeye, Arkansas to film the champion Southern Red Oak for the upcoming documentary on champion trees.

Hi, I'm Mark Wilcken, AETN Producer and director of the Regional Emmy Award-winning documentary "Clean Lines, Open Spaces."

I'm pleased to announce that “Champion Trees”, an AETN original documentary about the champion trees of Arkansas is deep in production. Haha, as the producer, my thoughts right now are consumed with how many terabytes of disk space I'm using, when I'll be able to schedule my next interview, crossing my fingers that it snows so that I can shoot at least one tree this winter and countless other details.

Since Spring of 2012, my crew and I have been busily running around Arkansas shooting these majestic giants with the help and guidance of Hot Springs artist Linda Palmer. At this point though, I thought I would take a moment from the hustle and bustle of production to share with you all of the amazing trees we’ve been finding in Arkansas.

Our travels have taken us near and far and we have been constantly impressed with the trees we’ve found and the people who care for them. Here are some photographs, just a little bit of a tease, for the documentary that will be coming in 2013.

We hope you'll stop by to view Linda's incredible work while her exhibit "Arkansas Champion Trees: An Artist's Journey" is on display at AETN headquarters (350 S. Donaghey, Conway). The opening reception will be held Saturday, Feb. 23, where Linda will give an artist's talking and will be sharing a preview of the documentary. We're sure that it will be a magnificent event.
