Put on your Mister Rogers Sweater for Public Media

Posted on 30 Apr 2014

You may know Fred Rogers, of “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood,” best as a snappy dresser (sweaters and sneakers, anyone?), as the man on TV who didn’t talk down to you as a child, or as a reassuring voice who, in terms you could follow, explained that you were special and that he liked you just the way you were. But did you also know that May 1 will mark the 45th anniversary of the day  that he, in many ways, saved public television?

On May 1, 1969, our loyal neighbor, Mister Fred Rogers, testified before the U.S. Senate to protect and restore funding to public media … and his testimony was as historic as he was influential.

After the Nixon administration proposed public media funding cuts, Fred Rogers went before a U.S. Senate subcommittee to ask, with his Mister Rogers touch, for Congress to restore full funding. His remarks were so powerful that he gave a self-described “tough guy” senator “goosebumps.” Not only was all public media funding restored, it helped increase future funding.

In salute to Fred Rogers’ lifelong support of public media, we, people and PBS stations across the country will honor him Thursday, May 1 — on the 45th anniversary of his testimony before the Senate — by participating in the Protect My Public Media “Put on Your Mister Rogers Sweater” campaign.

So, how can you join us? Grab your nearest Fred Rogers-style sweater (or cardigan or zip-up hoodie) and snap a selfie! Then, you can upload your dapper photo to the Protect My Public Media page at protectmypublicmedia.org/tell/ or share it on Facebook, Twitter (mention us — @aetn), or any other of your favorite social media outlets with #Sweaters4PubMedia. And be sure to look for our pics here and here tomorrow!
