AETN provides statewide update on HIV/AIDS

CONWAY, Ark. (AETN) — The Arkansas Educational Television Network (AETN) will present its annual program “HIV/AIDS in Arkansas: An Update” Wednesday, Nov. 14, at 6:30 p.m. AETN has been covering this subject for Arkansans each year since 1989.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, at the end of 2008, an estimated 1,178,350 persons in the United States were living with HIV/AIDS, with an estimated 50,000 additional cases diagnosed each year. In Arkansas, a total of 8,132 HIV/AIDS cases have been reported since 1983, as noted in the 2011 Arkansas HIV/AIDS Annual Report by the Arkansas Department of Health.

Panelists will discuss HIV/AIDS and its impact since the first diagnosis in 1981, statistics, trends, common risk factors, myths, transmission, diagnosis, treatment and support services and programs.

Expert panel members include Michael Burks, president, HIV Arkansas; Cornelius Mabin, chief operating officer, Living & Affected Corporation; and Naveen Patil, MD, MHSA, MA, section chief and medical director, HIV/STD & Hepatitis Program, Arkansas Department of Health.
