AETN’s ‘In Their Words,’ ‘Delta Dreams’ win top national honors

In Their Words, AETNs oral history project for Arkansass World War II veterans, and the documentary Delta Dreams took three first place honors at the National Educational Telecommunications Association (NETA) awards ceremony on Jan. 15.

In Their Words was recognized for both promotion campaign and outreach. The promotion campaign was created to generate interest in Ken Burns documentary, The War, and AETNs related projects and events.

The panel of industry experts who judged In Their Words called it astounding, adding, What a treasure the state of Arkansas has in its public television station. The judges also cited the campaigns many ambitious elements an interactive exhibit, unmatched press coverage, the veterans trip to the National World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C. saying that they set this project apart from War-related projects at other public television stations.
 
In the outreach category, In Their Words was praised for its effective storytelling and the way in which it linked the greatest generation with the present.

AETNs documentary on Helena-West Helena, Ark., Delta Dreams was awarded top honors in the news and public affairs category of the national competition. The judges deemed the production as very well conceived, dramatic in its retelling of history and the current revival efforts.

In all, 39 projects in the areas of program production, promotion, outreach and instructional media were honored. The celebratory presentation was part of NETAs annual conference, held this year in Tampa, Fla.

NETA is a professional association founded in 1997 to serve public television licensees and affiliated educational organizations. The organization has members in 44 states, the District of Columbia, and the Virgin Islands.  NETA is headquartered in Columbia, S.C.

The NETA Awards are annual recognition of member-produced excellence in public broadcasting, a tradition established more than 40 years ago by the pioneering Southern Educational Communications Association.
