This month Steve Barnes talks with Senator David Pryor on the eve of the release of his Autobiography “A Pryor Commitment.”
David Pryor, writing with his lifelong friend Don Harrell, tells of his youth in Camden, Arkansas, his life in the rural south when a Chevy dealer (his dad) might be enlisted to run for County Sherriff just because of his reputation for fairness, and a woman (his mother) might become one of the first of her gender to run for public office simply because she felt it was her duty.
Pryor’s story flows quickly for the reader enchanted by anecdotes. If his humor is tinged with irony, it may reflect the author’s 74 years, and his many opportunities to learn the value of that old adage about God giving him two ears, but only one mouth.
Yet this is a serious book, the record of a life lived with eyes wide-open, the story of a man who always believed that he could make a difference, if only he could find the strength to do the right thing. Pryor took a lot of hits during his career from those who took him to task for sounding like a moralist.
