NANOSCIENCE ACTIVITY: Atomic Bonds
This fun activity helps us learn about atomic bonds. Atomic bonds are too tiny for us to see without special equipment. What are atomic bonds? Atomic bonds are the way atoms interact with each other. By bonding together, the atoms balance to a neutral charge so they are neither positive nor negative. Basically, bonding makes the atoms happy! There are three types – ionic, covalent, and metallic. This experiment demonstrates covalent bonds.

You will need: a grown up, water, sugar, string, pencil, container

Directions:
Have the grown up help you boil about 1½ cup of water.
Add about ¾ cup of sugar to the water and stir the solution well.
Pour the solution into the jar. Make sure that the jar you selected can withstand the temperature of the hot water (a glass should work).
Suspend the string from a pencil.
Submerge the string in the solution.

Sugar crystals will grow slowly on the string over a period of several days. If you want the string to hang straight in the jar, tie a weight to the bottom of the string.
