Jerry Phillips

Jerry Phillips is a visual artist who currently lives in Little Rock, Arkansas.  He was born in Marshalltown, Iowa in 1958, and he received a BA from Florida State University, and an MFA from the California Institute of the Arts.  Upon graduation from CalArts, Phillips moved to New York, where he established a studio and participated in exhibitions and visual projects for over a decade.

Phillips' lush graphite drawings are based on details of found photographic images.  The source material is manipulated in the computer to further abstract the images, which are then rendered with layers of graphite to create a seductive collection of samples from popular culture.  For Phillips, the act of drawing with pencil is a conversation with time.  The resulting drawings then comprise a history of hunting and gathering to build a kind of archival collection of visual encounters.
