Get Involved in the Arkansas Campaign for Grade-Level Reading

Over the past year, everyone at AETN has been thrilled to participate in the Arkansas Campaign for Grade-Level Reading mission to help all Arkansas third graders read on grade level by 2020, and we've especially enjoyed the opportunity its provided to carry out five kick-off events in grantee communities. But nothing could speak to the importance of the work we're doing in partnership with the Arkansas Campaign for Grade-Level Reading, through a grant from the Winthrop Rockefeller Foundation, than seeing how it impacts Arkansas students!

b

To take literacy to the next level, this statewide endeavor has reached more than 6,000 children, parents, educators and community leaders across Arkansas, with plans to kick off an additional community project in Eudora, Ark., on Feb. 27.

b

With visits to grantee community organization events in Marvel, Springdale, ARKids Read Tutoring locations across central Arkansas, and Eudora, AETN and the Winthrop Rockefeller Foundation have worked to identify local literacy programs that address four core issues which support higher literacy achievement - school readiness, absenteeism, parental involvement and summer learning loss.

b

At each of these events, we've been proud to provide PBS Kids character interactions, parent/child learning activities, screenings of PBS Kids programming and character photo opportunities. Thanks to the funds made available through the Winthrop Rockefeller grants, we have also been able to provide each participating child with a backpack stuffed with Scholastic books, crayons, pencils, activity booklets, stickers, journals and more.

b

But, amid all of the fun and flash of the events, what we're most thrilled to see is Arkansas students love for reading and the characters that bring their stories to life! We were touched to receive thank-you notes and drawings from our friends at Chicot Elementary.
