Ken Burns’ “The Address” Premieres April 15
Posted on 08 Apr 2014
Need something to make tax day a little more bearable? How about the premiere of Ken Burns’ latest documentary? In “The Address,” hear the stories of boys attending a Vermont school where children with learning difference memorize and recite the Gettysburg Address in public, and unlock the history, context and importance of President Lincoln’s most powerful address in the process!
The featured students of Greenwood School, boys ages 11-17, all face a range of complex learning difference that make their personal, academic and social progress challenging. “The Address” reveals how Lincoln’s historic words motivate and engage these students a century-and-a-half after Lincoln delivered a speech that would go on to embolden the Union cause with some of the most stirring words ever spoken.
And, as some of you may already know, this program doesn’t end on your screen! In November, we joined Ken Burns, PBS and thousands across the country in participating in the “Learn the Address” initiative
, where we’ve invited individuals of all ages, vocations and interests to upload videos of themselves reciting the Gettysburg Address to the project website. The campaign uses social media and videos form public figures, political leaders, entertainers, historians and regular people like you (and us), to encourage others to create and submit their own renditions!
If you haven’t shared your video already, be sure to learn how at aetn.org/learntheaddress
, where you can also check out Arkansas submissions from people like Gov. Mike Beebe, Arkansas legislators, students from the Boys and Girls Clubs of Central Arkansas, Boy Scouts, teachers, history enthusiasts and many more.
We’re looking forward to watching this film and hearing your reactions. We’re fortunate to have the opportunity to feature films like this from Burns, and are exciting to learn more about his next project — a new series called “The Roosevelts: An Intimate History" — which is slated to air this fall, but you’ll have to keep an eye on our blog for future details!
