On the Front Row with Wayland Holyfield

DOWNLOAD:  Audio | Video | WebVTT Caption file

Holyfield is the writer and performer of Arkansas (You Run Deep in Me), which was named one of Arkansass official state songs in 1987. Holyfield performed the song at the inauguration of President Bill Clinton in 1992. When I wrote Arkansas (You Run Deep in Me) I really meant those words and still do, Holyfield said. Although I've lived in Nashville for many years, I'm very proud to be known as a born-and-raised Arkansan, and I love to get back home whenever I can.

Four native Arkansans turned hit Nashville songwriters, producers and musicians Wayland Holyfield, Mark Wright, Randy Goodrum and Shawn Camp.

It is my goal to make the song available to my fellow Arkansans, and in AETN I have found the perfect partner. Hopefully, the song can be used in various ways to raise money and awareness for AETN's entertainment and educational mission. All proceeds will be donated to AETN, and I'm delighted to do so.

We are pleased that Wayland Holyfield is coming to AETN and bringing his ever-popular Arkansas (You Run Deep in Me) with him, AETN Executive Director Allen Weatherly said. When Wayland expressed his interest in supporting public broadcasting through AETN, we were thrilled. To be able to share his cherished and popular song with Arkansans to help support the programs and services that folks expect from AETN is a true gift.

Arkansas (You Run Deep in Me) was a staple on AETN during the 80s and 90s as a nightly sign-off theme for the network, and since then weve gotten requests for copies of the song weekly. We are excited to bring it back to AETN and to have Wayland and this fantastic group of singer/songwriters performing in our studios.Grammy-nominated Holyfield has written more than 40 Top Ten hits and 14 No. 1 songs. Holyfield has written for Anne Murray, Don Williams, Randy Travis, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Peter Townsend, Reba McEntire, Ernest Tubb, George Strait and George Jones. Other Holyfield songs include: Could I Have This Dance, Youre My Best Friend, Till the Rivers All Run Dry, Youre Going Out of My Mind and Nobody Likes Sad Songs.

The taping on June 24 (2010) brings together three terrific Arkansans who have become very successful in the music industry, Holyfield said. Randy Goodrum, Mark Wright and Shawn Camp all currently reside in Nashville, but the fact that they all readily agreed to come home and donate their talents to a great cause like Arkansas public television speaks volumes about how Arkansas runs deep in them, too. We'll be on stage to join in songs, stories, lots of laughs, and maybe even a tear or two.

Wright, MCA Nashville Senior Vice President of A&R and a Fayetteville native, has more than 40 No. 1 hits that he has either written, published or produced. He has produced music for Clint Black, Mark Chesnutt, Lee Ann Womack, Gary Allan and Rhett Akins and has written for Kenny Rogers, The Oak Ridge Boys, Eddie Rabbitt and Alabama, among others.

Goodrum, originally from Hot Springs and a Hendrix College Alum, is an inductee of the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, has written or co-written songs for Anne Murray, Steve Perry and Chicago, and performed as a keyboardist on recordings by Amy Grant and other artists. Goodrum was recently awarded the 2010 Odyssey Medal for Artistic Creativity from Hendrix College for demonstrating the value of a liberal arts education through personal and professional accomplishments.

Camp, born in Little Rock and raised in Perry and Saline counties, is a singer and songwriter who has created material for artists including Ralph Stanley, Del McCourey, Ricky Skaggs, Garth Brooks and Brooks & Dunn. He has also performed with Yonder Mountain String Band, Alan Jackson, Osborne Brothers and John Prine.

WOW! AND WELCOME TO FRONT ROW WITH WAYLAND HOLYFIELD BUT I WILL ASSURE YOU THAT THAT'S JUST THE TITLE, BECAUSE IT'S WELCOME TO FRONT ROW WITH SOME OF THE GREAT PLAYERS FROM -- AND WRITERS FROM NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE, WHO ARE ALL ARKANSANS, WHO HAVE COME BACK HOME. SO WE'RE GOING TO TRY TO PICK AND SING A LITTLE BIT FOR YOU, DO SOME SONGS WE HAVE WRITTEN OVER THE YEARS, AND HOPEFULLY HAVE A LAUGH OR TWO. MAYBE A TEAR. BUT THAT MIGHT BE BECAUSE OF SOME OF OUR PLAYING. [ LAUGHTER ]

BUT HOPEFULLY NOT. LET ME INTRODUCE THESE GUYS TO YOU. ON THE FAR LEFT OVER HERE IS MARK WRIGHT, WHO IS FROM FAYETTEVILLE, ARKANSAS. MARK IS ONE OF THE TOP SONGWRITERS AND RECORD PRODUCERS IN NASHVILLE. HE'S PRODUCED SOME RECORDS THAT YOU'VE HEARD ON THE RADIO THAT NOBODY KNOWS WHO THE PRODUCER IS, AND MOST OF THE TIME THEY DON'T KNOW WHO THE WRITER IS. BUT MARK IS A MEMBER OF THE ARKANSAS ENTERTAINERS HALL OF FAME AND WE'LL BE TALKING ABOUT HIM AS WE GO ALONG TONIGHT, I ASSURE YOU. MARK WRIGHT! [ APPLAUSE ]

HEY.

SHAWN CAMP HERE IS FROM PERRY COUNTY.

THAT'S RIGHT. ACROSS THE RIVER OVER HERE.

YES, THAT'S RIGHT.

WE ARE OVER HERE. WE DIDN'T HAVE TO TAKE THE FERRY THIS TIME.

BUT SHAWN IS A -- HE'S THE YOUNGEST ONE OF THE GROUP UP HERE. WE HAD TO HAVE A TOKEN YOUNGSTER IN THE GROUP. [ LAUGHTER ]

BUT SHAWN IS A TERRIFIC WRITER, A REALLY SUPER PICKER TOO, AS YOU WILL SEE TONIGHT. AND HE'S WRITTEN SOME WONDERFUL SONGS THAT YOU WILL BE HEARING AND WE CAN'T WAIT TO HAVE SHAWN PICK WITH US A LOT TONIGHT. FROM PERRY COUNTY, SHAWN CAMP! [ APPLAUSE ]

MY FAMILY. WOO!

AND OVER HERE IS RANDY GOODRUM WHO IS FROM HOT SPRINGS, ARKANSAS. I COULD GO ON A LONG TIME ABOUT RANDY. HE'S ONE OF THE TOP SONGWRITERS IN THE UNITED STATES, AND NOT ONLY COUNTRY, POP, R & B AND HE ALSO WORKS OVERSEAS A LOT, IN EUROPE, JAPAN. BUT RANDY HAS ACCOMPLISHED A HOT. HE HAS DONE SOME INCREDIBLE THINGS. ACTUALLY ONE THING HE DID WAS TO PLAY IN A BAND IN HIGH SCHOOL WITH HIS FELLOW ARKANSAN WHO WENT ON TO USE THAT, I THINK AS A STEPPING STONE TO BECOME PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES.

THAT'S RIGHT. HE WOULD HAVE NEVER MADE IT WITHOUT THAT.

NOT WITHOUT THE EXPERIENCE OF THAT BAND.

NO WAY.

BUT RANDY IS ABOUT TO BE INDUCTED INTO THE -- WELL, I SHOULD SAY HE'S GOING TO BE NAMED A DISTINGUISHED HENDRIX ALUM IN OCTOBER.

THAT'S RIGHT.

RIGHT DOWN THE STREET.

DOWN THE ROAD. HE'S A FORMER ASCAP SONGWRITER OF THE YEAR IN NASHVILLE AND HE'S A MEMBER OF THE NASHVILLE SONGWRITERS HALL OF FAME. THE LEGENDARY RANDY GOODRUM. [ APPLAUSE ]

THANK YOU.

SO WE'VE GOT SOME -- WE'VE GOT PEOPLE THAT COME THROUGH DIFFERENT WINDOWS UP HERE FOR YOU, AND I HOPE YOU ENJOY THIS. IT WILL BE PRETTY LOOSE.
