Mulberry River Overlook, Glory Hole Iced, Grant Co Museum, Snow Float Crooked Creek
An Ozark snowfall creates a glorious picture postcard scene near Anvil Rock, overlooking the Mulberry River northwest of Ozark. Winter's sub zero temperatures transform the trail leading to Glory Hole Falls into breathtaking views of ice and flowing water. The Grant County Museum in Sheridan contains ten galleries plus an outside Heritage Square, that traces the county's development from pre historic times to the present…  and then some. Episode concludes with a "snow float" along Crooked Creek near Harrison, observing winter wildlife.

TRANSCRIPT

WE ARE APPROXIMATELY FROM THE OZARK I WOULD SAY 15 MILES.  WE TOOK  23 NORTH AND TOOK RURAL OAK TO THE SPOT THAT WE PARKED HERE AND WE'RE -- THIS IS ON THE SOUTH SIDE OF MULBERRY RIVER THAT WE'RE GOING DO AND THE ANVIL ROCK OVERLOOK AS I SAID AND THE ACCESS IS TOUGH TO GET TO.  IT'S ONE OF MY FAVORITE SPOTS TO COME TO.  I COME HERE FREQUENTLY TO CLEAR MY HEAD.

SOUNDS GOOD.  UPON THE INVITATION OF OUT DOOR ENTHUSIAST DOUG MABRY WE WENT TO HIS FAVORITE OVER LOOK AT THE MULBERRY RIVER AND THE RECENT SNOWFALL ADDED TO THE BEAUTY OF THE AREA.  AFTER WALKING LESS THAN A HUNDRED YARDS AT A GATE WHERE YOU CAN PARK AND LOOK FOR THE FLAT ROCK AND GO LEFT AND GO DOWNHILL.  SINCE THERE ISN'T ANY TRAIL YOU HAVE TO BUSH WALK YOUR WAY DOWN VEERING OFF TO THE RIGHT.  ABOUT 200-YARDS FROM THE ROAD YOU WILL SPOT THE RIVER AS YOU ROOF THE OVER LOOK.

YEAH, THIS MAKES IT WORTH WHILE HERE.  BEAUTIFUL.

WHEN YOU GET DOWN HERE IT'S DEFINITELY WORTH IT.  I HAVE OBSERVED A LOT OF EAGLES FROM THIS SPOT.  YOU MIGHT GET LUCKY AND SEE ONE.  YOU MAY NOT SEE ANY.  YOU MAY SEE 10 OR 20. YOU JUST NEVER KNOW.  THIS PARTICULAR AREA IS THE START OF THE LOWER SECTION ON THE MULBERRY RIVER.  IT'S CALLED THE OVAL, THE ANVIL ROCK OVERLOOK HERE.

THAT'S A TONGUE TWISTER.

YES IT IS AND THERE'S A ROCK JUST BELOW HERE HERE THAT IS THE SHAPE OF AN  ANVIL AND SALT CREEKS BEND -- I'M NOT SURE WHY THEY CALL IT THAT BUT WE'RE ON THE SOUTH SIDE OF THE RIVER AND THIS IS A GREAT SPOT. THERE'S A LOT OF UNSEEN STUFF DOWN HERE THAT PEOPLE THAT YOU JUST NEED TO GET OUT AND STOMP AROUND AND CHECK OUT.

I GUESS WE CAME HERE AT THE OPPORTUNE TIME AFTER A GOOD SNOWFALL.

RIGHT.

AND I IMAGINE AUTUMN IS BEAUTIFUL TOO.

YES IT'S ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL AND YOU GET THE FALL COLORS BUT TODAY WE DIDN'T SEE ANY EAGLES.

OH WELL.

YEAH, I COME HERE QUITE -- I ONLY LIVE 2 MILES FROM HERE AND I COME DOWN HERE ALL THE TIME AT LEAST ONCE A WEEK.

IT'S A GOOD INSPIRATION POINT HERE I IMAGINE.

ABSOLUTELY, YEAH, YEAH. CLEAR YOUR HEAD.  GET YOUR THOUGHTS TOGETHER OUT HERE.

THERE WAS ONE DAY THOUGH AS MABRY MENTIONED ONE DAY HE GOT A LITTLE TOO RELAXED.

YEAH, I CAME DOWN ON A SATURDAY IN THE SPRING, A REALLY BEAUTIFUL DAY.  I GOT DOWN HERE ABOUT FIVE, 6:00 O'CLOCK AND HAD MY HAMMY BETWEEN TWO TREES AND I HEARD SOMEBODY YELLING FOR ME AND IT WAS MY WIFE AND WAS CONCERNED.  HE WONDERED IF SOMETHING HAPPENED TO ME BUT IT WAS ALL GOOD.  I WAS RELAXED.

RELAX FOR YOURSELF THAT ANVIL ROCK OVERLOOK ABOVE THE MULBERRY RIVER NORTHWEST OF OZARK.

THE BEAUTY OF WINTER IF YOU CAN BRAVE THE ELEMENTS IS BECKONING YOU TO EXPLORE.  IT'S A BEAUTIFUL COMBINATION OF ICE AND RUNNY WATER AND GLORY HOLE OVER THERE WAS FROZEN SOLID IF YOU CAN BELIEVE THAT AT SUB FREEZING TEMPERATURES AND NOW THAT THE TEMPERATURE IS UP ABOVE FREEZING IT'S A RAGING GIGANTIC FACET.  ACTUALLY IF IT WASN'T FOR THE PORING DOWN RAIN THIS PARTICULAR DAY AND WITH ALL OF THE RUNOFF THE FROZEN COLUMN BEHIND THE RUSHING WATER WOULD STILL BE VISIBLE.  GLORY HOLE TO SAY THE LEAST IS QUITE AN INTERESTING WATERFALL. THROUGHOUT TIME THE RUSHING WATER LITTLE BY LITTLE EVENTUALLY BORE A HOLE THROUGH THE ROOF OF AN OVER HANGING BLUFF AND THUS CREATING A STUNNING WATERFALL COMING OUT OF THE ROCK BELOW.

I REMEMBER WHEN I SAW THIS WATERFALL FOR THE VERY FIRST TIME I WAS MESMERIZED FROM THE WATER GUSHING OUT FROM THE HOLE IN THE ROCK.  GETTING TO GLORY HOLE IS FAIRLY EASY.  IF YOU'RE COMING FROM FALLSVILLE IN THE OZARK NATIONAL FOREST ON HIGHWAY 21 GO EAST 6.2 MILES TURN RIGHT DOWN THE DIRT ROAD TO PARK. THERE IS A GLORY HOLE SIGN THERE POINTING DOWN THE ROAD.  ABOUT A QUARTER OF THE MILE DOWN THE ROAD IS WHERE THE TRAIL STARTS AND IT'S THREE QUARTERS OF A MILE OR SO DOWN THIS TRAIL. ALONG THE WAY THERE'S AT LEAST A COUPLE DECENT WATERFALLS THAT YOU CAN ENJOY AND PHOTOGRAPH. I MIGHT ADD YOU WILL BE CROSSING THE MAINSTREAM PLUS A COUPLE OTHER TRIBUTARIES ACROSS THE TRAIL SO APPROPRIATE FOOT WARE IS WISE ESPECIALLY DURING WINTER.  ALLOW YOURSELF AT LEAST THREE HOURS FOR THE 2-MILE ROUND TRIP HIKE INCLUDINGS THE TIME YOU SPENT AT GLORY HOLE ITSELF.

IN THE TOWN OF SHERIDAN THERE'S A MUSEUM THAT COULD QUITE FRANKLY RIVAL ANY OF THE STATE PARK MUSEUMS.  THE GRANT COUNTY MUSEUM TRACES THE COUNTY DEVELOPMENT FROM PREHISTORIC TIMES TO THE PRESENT AND THEN SOME.  CONTAINING ABOUT 10 GALLERIES THE GRANT COUNTY MUSEUM IS DEFINITELY MUCH BIGGER ON THE INSIDE THAN IT LOOKS ON THE OUTSIDE.

YES.  WE HEAR THAT ALL OF THE TIME.  PEOPLE -- ESPECIALLY WE'RE A LITTLE OFF THE BEATEN PATH SO PEOPLE WILL COME IN AND I HEARD ABOUT YOUR MUSEUM BUT ONCE THEY GET HERE IT'S ABSOLUTELY ASTONISHING AND WE HAVE 3 ACRES AND THE BOARD WALK AND THE MAIN BUILDING HERE SO THERE IS DEFINITELY A LOT TO SEE.

WHEN I FIRST CAME HERE GOING THROUGH -- I MEAN YOU HAVE THE WILDLIFE DISPLAY HERE.  YOU'VE GOT A WORLD WAR II, VIETNAM WAR, KOREAN WAR, AUTOMOBILES AND SOME FUTURE LOOKING CAR.  I DIDN'T KNOW EXISTED AND BUILT BACK IN 1985.

YES.

AND THE OTHER BUILDING AND EXTENSIVE WORLD WAR II VEHICLE COLLECTION.

YES, ALL DONATED. EVERYTHING THAT WE HAVE HERE IS DONATED BY MOTHLY GRANT COUNTY RESIDENTS. A FEW FROM OUT OF THE COUNTY BUT EVERYTHING IS PRETTY MUCH DONATED AND MAKE THE GALLERY WHAT WE ARE.

AND HAVING THE SECTION OF MUSIC HISTORY.

YES.

AND A COVERED WAGON.

YES.

JOHN BODE'S FISHING BOATS.

ANYTHING YOU CAN IMAGINE WE HAVE IT.  I CAN GUARANTEE YOU ANYTHING YOU CAN IMAGINE WE HAVE SOMETHING RELATED TO IT OR IT CAN BE FOUND HERE SO THERE'S A LOT TO SEE.

ALTHOUGH NOT LABELED AS A MILITARY MUSEUM IT DOES CONTAIN AS ALREADY MENTIONED QUITE AN EXTENSIVE DISPLAY OF WORLD WAR II VEHICLES SUCH AS WITH THE RICHARD HARRISON COLLECTION OF MILITARY VEHICLES.

HE WAS LOOKING FOR A DONOR FOR HIS COLLECTION AND WE HEARD OF THIS AND SOME OF OUR FOUNDATION MEMBERS GOT TOGETHER AND THROUGH THE DONOR WE WERE ABLE TO BUILD A BUILDING OUT BACK, THE HARRISON BUILDING, THAT HOLDS THE VEHICLES AND WE BROUGHT THEM HERE AND HAVE THEM ON DISPLAY FOR VIEWING. AND I UNDERSTAND IS ONE OF THE LARGEST --

COLLECTIONS.

-- IN THE NATION.

JESUS.  SO WE ARE VERY FORTUNATE HE WAS GENEROUS AND KIND TO DONATE THOSE.

THE CIVIL WAR PERIOD IS ALSO OF COURSE COVERED WITH  THE BATTLE OF JENKINS FERRY AND CONSIDERING THE TIME JENKINS FERRY WAS ONE OF THE BLOODIEST BATTLES AND THOUSANDS OF UNION AND CONFEDERATE CASUALTIES RESPECTFULLY.  IN KEEPING WITH THE MILITARY THEME THERE IS ANOTHER UNIQUE ITEM ON DISPLAY HERE, A BOTTLE OF VINTAGE COGNAC PURCHASED IN 1938 WHEN THE LAST MAN CLUB WAS FORMED.  CONSISTING OF WORLD 11 VETS A MEETING WAS TO BE HELD UNTIL ONLY ONE MEMBER SURVIVED AND THEN THE BOTTLE COULD BE OPENED.  OLIVER WILLIAMS WAS THE LAST MAN AND OPENED THE BOTTLE TO GIVE A TOAST TO HIS DEPARTED COMREGARDS.  THE TOAST AND A PICTURE REMAIN ON PERMANENT DISPLAY. WELL NOT ONLY DO YOU HAVE ALL OF THE EXHIBITS INSIDE -- IF THAT WASN'T ENOUGH, YOU HAVE ALL THIS ON THE OUTSIDE.

YES.  WE WERE DONATED EACH BUILDING BEGINNING IN THE EARLY 90'S EACH BUILDING WAS DONATED AND RELOCATED OUT HERE TO HERITAGE SQUARE AND ALL OF THE BUILDINGS ARE MAINTAINED.  THEY ARE DECORATED AND FURNISHED AS TO THE TIME --

YEAH, LIKE THE SCHOOL HOUSE.

YES.

YOU'VE GOT SOMETHING YOU DON'T SEE EVERYDAY IS THE OLD CAFE.

YES.

MILL TOWN CAFE.

YES.  IT'S VERY FAMILIAR TO A LOT OF OUR GRANT COUNTY RESIDENTS.  THEY LIKE TO COME INTO THE CAFE AND TAKES THEM BACK TO THE TIME OF THEIR YOUTH AND A HAMBURGER MIGHT HAVE BEEN 10, 20-CENTS AND THEY ENJOY THAT.  WE ALSO HAVE THE HOME OVER THERE.  THAT'S ONE OF OUR FAVORITES HERE.  WE HAVE THE HOUSE HERE -- WE HAVE A POST OFFICE IN HERE, A DOCTORS AND LAWYER'S OFFICE SO YOU SEE A THREE IN ONE IN THAT HOUSE SO WE HAVE DIFFERENT OPPORTUNITIES FOR SIGHTINGS OUT HERE IF YOU WILL.

AND SCHOOL KIDS CAN COME HERE AND SEE --

ABSOLUTELY.

-- EARLY AMERICA.

IT'S A GREAT TOOL FOR THE KIDS AND THEY CAN READ ABOUT IT IN THE HISTORY BOOKS BUT TO COME OUT AND SEE AND WE HAVE LIVING PRESENTERS THAT COME OUT.  WE HAVE A BLACKSMITH THAT WILL COME OUT AND VISIT WITH THE STUDENTS SO IT'S A GREAT OPPORTUNITY FOR THEM.

IT'S ALSO A GREAT OPPORTUNITY FOR EVERYONE, NOT JUST GRANT COUNTY RESIDENTS TO EXPERIENCE INCLUDING LAST BUT NOT LEAST A 700 FEET NATURE TRAIL BOARD WALK THROUGH SHACKLEFORD WOODS AND IF YOU HAVE ENERGY LEFT YOU CAN CLIMB THE OLD FIRE TOWER OUT BACK.

WE'RE GOING TO CLOSE OUT THE PROGRAM KIND OF IN A WAY WE STARTED IT BY TREKKING OUT IN THE SNOW EXCEPT IN THIS PARTICULAR CASE WITH THE SNOW FLOAT.  WE'RE ON CROOKED CREEK NEAR HARRISON.  THE TEMPERATURE IS IN THE SINGLE DIGITS AND THE WIND CHILL FACTOR IS BELOW ZERO BUT IT WILL ALL BE WORTH IT SO HE SAID.

WELL, WE'RE GOING OUT THERE. I THINK IT'S GOING TO BE GOOD. HOPEFULLY WE WILL SEE SOME THINGS AND SNOW AND PLENTY OF WATER IF WE KEEP FROM FREEZING TO DEATH.

ALL RIGHT. DENNIS WHITESIDE IS A POPULAR STREAM GUIDE IN THE ARKANSAS AND MISSOURI OZARKS WITH WHOM WE'VE GONE OUT ON A COUPLE OF PREVIOUS SEGMENTS.

CHUCK AS YOU KNOW I SPEND MOST OF MY TIME FLOATING IN THE SUMMERTIME FISHING BUT I DO GET OUT IN THE WINTER.  I ENJOY IT. THERE IS NOTHING QUITE LIKE IT. A LOT OF WILDLIFE AND I ACTUALLY SPEND A LOT OF TIME HUNTING IN THE WINTER TIME.

YOU SAID THOUGH THE WILDLIFE YOU CAN SEE AT THIS TIME OF THE YEAR IS ALL COMPLETELY DIFFERENT.

YOU JUST SEE A LOT MORE WILDLIFE -- ACTUALLY A LOT OF THE WATER FOWL SPECIES ARE ALONG THE RIVER AND WE HAVE COLD TEMPERATURES IN THE FLAT WATER AND IT'S FROZEN AND THE STREAMS ARE LIKE LIFE BLOOD.  THEY'RE THE PLACE WHERE YOU CAN GET TO THE WATER.  DUCKS AND GEESE CAN FEED I LIKE THE SNOW THIS TIME OF THE YEAR THAT IT HIGHLIGHTS. YOU SEE THE SHADOWS AND THE SHAPES.  WE PUT IN -- WE'RE ON THE UPPER END OF THE CREEK. HALF COLT ROAD, CROOKED CREEK, MULE MARSHALL.

CROOKED CREEK HAS BEEN A LONG TIME FAVORITE WITH ANGULARS AND CLASSIFIED AS A SMALL RIBBON TROUT STREAM.

I GOT GOOD SMALL MOUTH IN THIS WATER.  THERE'S VERY FEW PLACES ON CROOKED CREEK THAT HAVE NOT ACTUALLY FLOATED.   A LOT OF PEOPLE DON'T KNOW IT BUT BASICALLY THE STREAM GOES UNDER GROUND AT THE BRIDGE AT HILLVILLE AND NORMALLY YOU CAN'T FLOAT ANY IN THAT.  IN THE SPRING THERE IS ENOUGH WATER BUT UP HERE THERE'S ALWAYS WATER AND CROOKED CREEK A PHENOMENAL FISHERY.  I HAVE BEEN ON COUNTRYLESS STREAMS AND I'M NOT SURE THERE IS A FISHERY LIKE IT ANYWHERE.  SUMMERTIME COME DOWN THROUGH HERE AND BE WAITING AND KICK UP CLOUDS OF CRAWDADS.

WHAT ABOUT THE FISHING THOUGH AT THIS TIME OF THE YEAR?

FISHING -- YOU'VE GOT TO FISH SLOW AND KEEP.  FISH ARE IN WHAT I CALL WINTERING HOLES, THE DEEPEST BODY OF WATER ON ANY PARTICULAR STREAM, AND LATHARJIC WOULD BE ONE TERM TO GIVE THEM.

THERE ARE SOME RIGHT THERE.

THAT IS PROBABLY SUCKERS.

YEAH.

BUT IF YOU FISH WITH ALL SMART HERGIGS AND DEEP AND AROUND BOLDERS YOU CAN CATCH FISH.  I DO A LITTLE WINTER FISHING BUT FRANKLY IT'S NOT WHAT I WANT TO DO WHEN YOU CAN GET OUT HERE AND DO WHAT WE'RE DOING, DUCK HUNTING, AND SEE WILDLIFE THERE'S NOTHING QUITE LIKE T THE VEGETATION IS DOWN. YOU CAN SEE WAY BACK INTO THE WOODS.  THE GEOLOGY GETS MORE EXPOSED AND LIKE YOU WERE SAYING LOOKING AT KING FISH THERE.

YEAH.

BUT THERE'S JUST LOTS OF WILDLIFE UP AND DOWN THE RIVER. ALL KINDS OF WATER FOWL.

AND MOST OF THE TIME YOU COME OUT THIS TIME OF THE YEAR NOBODY ELSE WANTS TO BRAVE THE COLD.

NO.  NO, I NEVER SEE ANYONE. NOW, THERE ARE THOSE THAT LIKE TO GET OUT AND MAKE A FLOAT IN THE WINTER TIME AND I ENCOURAGE THEM TO DO IT.  YOU NEED TO BE PREPARED FOR IT AND DRESS WARMLY.  I LIKE TO ROAST A HOT DOG, STOP, BUILD A FIRE. THAT'S WHAT WE DO WHEN WE'RE HUNTING. WE WILL GO UNTIL ABOUT NOON AND BUILD A FIRE AND MORE TIMES THAN NOT WE'RE AT THE LIMIT BY THEN AND I DO A LOT OF SQUIRREL HUNTING THIS TIME OF THE YEAR. IT'S THEIR MATING SEASON BELIEVE IT OR NOT SO THEY'RE ACTIVE, AND YOU WILL HAVE TO CLEAN SOME COLD GAME AT THE END OF THE TRIP BUT IT'S ONE -- I THINK YOU FIGURED OUT BY NOW CHUCK I ENJOY OUR STREAMS AND I AM OUT HERE YEAR ROUND AND THERE IS NOTHING LIKE IT ALL.

THAT'S FOR SURE.  THERE IS A SWIMMING HOLE RIGHT HERE.

YEAH.  THE DIP ON THIS HOLE WATER HERE WITH THE HOLES AND FISH.  MAYBE UNDER A ROCK, A LOG.  AND THEY DO EAT A LITTLE BIT THROUGH THE WINTER BUT THEIR METABOLISM IS DOWN QUITE A BIT.

AND IT WAS AT THIS PICTURESQUE SWIMMING HOLE WHICH I HAVE TO REMEMBER IN THE SUMMER WHERE WE STOPPED TO BUILD A FIRE AND WARM UP AND ROAST A FEW HOT DOGS.  HOW MANY TIMES A YEAR DO YOU DO THIS IN THE WINTER TIME?

NOT TOO OFTEN.  NOT THIS COLD.  I HAVE MADE A FEW FLOAT THIS IS COLD AND HAVE KILLED DUCKS.  I HAVE BEEN OUT THIS YEAR PROBABLY HAVE A DOZEN TIMES ON RIVERS, FIRST TIME IN THE SNOW, BUT I ENJOY IT.  I FLOAT AND HUNT UP IN MISSOURI NOW BECAUSE THAT'S WHERE SQUIRRELS LIVE BUT YEARS AGO I WOULD COME TO CROOKED CREEK AND FLOAT IT. I HAVE SPENT ALL DAY FLOATING CROOKED CREEK UPSTREAM FROM HARRISON.  MOST PEOPLE DON'T KNOW CROOKED CREEK GOES THROUGH HARRISON BUT IT DOES AND LOTS OF STORIES HERE ON THIS CREEK. IT'S A WONDERFUL FISHERY AND THAT BIG CANOE WAS IN A WHILE AGO.  I HAVE NO DOUBT I FILLED ENOUGH SMALL MOUTH TO FILL THAT A TIME OR TWO BUT I HAVEN'T FISHED HERE IN ABOUT EIGHT YEARS SINCE I MOVED TO MISSOURI.  I AM GLAD YOU CALLED ON THIS WINTER FLOAT.  I KNEW PEOPLE WOULD ENJOY SEEING WHAT IT'S LIKE OUT HERE.  IT'S A LITTLE MORE BRISK THAN WHAT YOU WANT SOMETIMES BUT THERE IS NOTHING LIKE IT.

YEAH, THOSE FOLKS WILLING TO BRAVE THE COLD AND THE ELEMENTS IT IS WELL WORTH IT.

A LOT OF PEOPLE DO NOW. KAYAKS ARE IMPORTANT FOR PEOPLE THAT GO BY THEMSELVES OUT ON THE STREAMS.  I LIKE MY CANOES BECAUSE THEY'RE BIGGER AND YOU CAN PUT MORE HOT DOGS IN IT AND COMFORTABLE.  MOST EVERYBODY SEES YOU HOW THE THIS TIME OF THE YEAR THINK THOSE PEOPLE ARE CRAZY AND CHANCES  ARE I'M A LITTLE CRAZY BUT I LOVE THIS STUFF.  CHUCK, I DO.  I TELL PEOPLE IF THERE WAS SOMETHING BETTER THAN WHAT I DO I WOULD BE DOING THAT.

SO WHEN IT SNOWS AGAIN TRY A SNOW FLOAT FOR YOURSELF.  JUST GRAB A CANOE OR KAYAK AND GO TO THE NEAREST STREAM AND ENJOY THE BEAUTY OF WINTER IN A UNIQUE WAY AND FOR MORE ON THIS DESTINATION OR OTHERS VISIT OUR WEBSITE.
