TRANSCRIPT

HELLO AND WELCOME TO "MINORITY MATTERS".  I AM YOUR HOST SYLVESTER SMITH.  WE HONOR AND RECOGNIZE THE HELPEDS OF PEOPLE THAT HAVE SACRIFICED THEIR LIFE TO SHAPE YOUR COUNTRY INTO A PLACE WHERE MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. PUT IT, "PEOPLE WILL NOT BE JUDGED BY THE CONTENT OF COLOR OF THEIR SKIN BUT THE CONTENT OF THEIR CHARACTER" IN THIS PROGRAM WE ARE GOING TO DISCUSS WHETHER OR NOT WE LIVE IN A POST RACIAL AMERICA AND PONDER THE QUESTION DOES RACE MATTER AND IF SO, WHAT IS IT'S RELEVANCE? JOINING ME IS DALE CHARLES WHO WORKS FOR THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF COLORED PEOPLE OR NAACP.  DR. LUIS FERNANDO RESTREPO ASSISTANT VICE CHANCELLOR FOR DIVERSITY AND COMMUNITY AT UNIVERSITY OF ARKANSAS AND PASTOR ANTHONY HENDRICKS WHO IS THE PASTOR AT MOSAIC CHUCH OF CONWAY.  THANK YOU FOR JOINING ME TODAY.  IN THE INTERSECTION INTERINTRODUCTION I MENTIONED MR. KING AND HIS IMPACT CANNOT BE OVER STATED BUT I WOULD LIKE TO READ AN EXERT FROM HIS FINAL SPEECH, AND THE MOUNTAIN TOP SPEECH THAT WE CALL IT THAT HE GAVE DURING THE SANITATION STRIKE "WE HAVE DIFFICULT DAYS AHEAD BUT IT DOESN'T MATTER TO ME NOW BECAUSE I OF TO THE MOUNTAIN TOP.  LIKE ANYBODY I WOULD LIKE TO LIVE A LONG LIFE.  BUT I'M NOT CONCERNED WITH THAT NOW.  I JUST WANT TO DO GOD'S WILL AND I LOOKED OVER AND I SEEN THE PROMISE LAND.  I MAY WANT GET THERE WITH YOU BUT I WANT YOU TO KNOW TONIGHT THAT WE AS A PEOPLE WILL GET TO THE PROMISED LAND." AS WE ALL KNOW ON APRIL 4, 1968, THE NEXT DAY DR. KING WAS ASSASSINATED.  I THINK THE FOUNDATIONAL QUESTION FOR THIS DISCUSSION HAS HIS VISION BECOME REALITY HERE IN 2014 WHEN WE LIVE IN A NATION IN WHICH WE NOT ONLY HAVE A AFRICAN-AMERICAN PRESIDENT BUT AN AFRICAN-AMERICAN PRESIDENT THAT HAS BEEN TWICE ELECTED BY A MAJORITY OF AMERICANS.  ARE WE IN THE  PROMISED LAND?  DO WE LIVE IN A POST RACIAL AMERICA?

NO WE DO NOT.  WE CAME A LONG WAYS BUT WE'RE A LONG WAY FROM DR. KING'S VISION AND WHAT YOU READ FROM AND THERE ARE A NUMBER OF REASONS I COULD SAY THAT AND I WILL ADDRESS MORE AS THE SHOW GOES ON, BUT I THINK EVEN THIS WEEK THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA CAME OUT AND ADMITTED THAT HE IS STILL HAVING DIFFICULTIES NOT BECAUSE OF WHAT HE HAD DONE BUT THE COLOR OF HIS SKIN.  HE HAS BEEN LONG, LONG NOT WANT TO GET INTO THAT CONVERSATION, BUT SOMETHING CAUSED HIM TO ENTER INTO IT OVER THE WEEKEND, AND IF HE HAS TRIED AS MUCH IN HIS POWER NOT TO MAKE THOSE TYPE OF COMMENTS AND HE MADE THEM THEN IT SAYS A LOT, BUT AS YOU LOOK ACROSS AMERICA AND THE STATE OF ARKANSAS THERE IS A LOT OF PROGRESS THAT HAS BEEN MADE BUT THERE IS A LOT OF INJUSTICE THAT STILL EXISTS WITHIN THIS COMMUNITY, WITHIN THIS STATE AND WITHIN THIS NATION.

PASTOR.

NO, I DON'T BELIEVE WE HAVE MADE IT TO THE PROMISED LAND TO USE THAT SAME ANALOGY.  I WOULD SAY WE'RE OUTSIDE OF GERICAULT WHEN IS THE PROCESSED LAND.  WE HAVE A WAYS TO GO.  I THINK THERE ARE A NUMBERED STRIDES WE MADE THIS COUNTRY BEWE HAVE A WAYS TO GET TO HIS DREAM AND THE DREAM WASN'T JUST FOR THE AFRICAN-AMERICAN TO ADVANCE BUT ALONG WITH THE AFRICAN-AMERICAN AND HIS ADVANCEMENTS THAT WE WOULD HAVE WHAT WE CALLED THE GLORIOUS COMMUNITY AND WHAT THAT COMMUNITY WAS ALL ABOUT THAT ALL NATIONS, ALL RACES WOULD COME TOGETHER AND EXPERIENCE THE AMERICAN DREAM TOGETHER AND WE STILL ARE FAR, FAR DISTANCE FROM THAT PARTICULAR GOAL, THE DREAM THAT HE HAD.

YES, AND I WOULD SAY WE HAVE DONE SOME PROGRESS IN SOME AREAS SPECIFICALLY OF HAVING A SET OF FRAMEWORKS OF LEGISLATION THAT PROTECT THAT REALLY OUT FRONT PUBLIC ASSAULT ON INDIVIDUALS BASED ON RACE IS NO LONGER POSSIBLE OR AT LEAST IT HAS A COST, BUT ON THE OTHER SIDE WE'VE SEEN OTHER FORMS OF INEQUALITY AND BASIC ACCESS TO RESOURCES WHETHER IT'S HIGHER EDUCATION OR SO FORTH THAT HAS DIVIDED US MUCH MORE AND BASICALLY SOMETIMES THEY HAVE SOME IMPLICATIONS OF THE PREVIOUS RACIAL DIVISION IN AMERICA SYLVESTER YOU KNOW THAT SPEECH HE SAID WE AS A PEOPLE -- NOT WE AS BLACK FOLKS AND WE AS PEOPLE AND HE WAS INCLUDING EVERYBODY AND THROUGHOUT HIS LIFE AND TEACHING HE WAS ABOUT BRINGING JUSTICE AND EQUITY TO EVERYBODY.  HE MADE THAT "I HAVE A DREAM"  SPEECH ON THE MARCH ON WASHINGTON AND TALKED ABOUT HIS CHILDREN WOULD BE JUDGED BY THEIR CHARACTER AND NOT THE COLOR OF THEIR SKIN AND HE UNDERSTOOD THAT AMERICA HAD NOT YET GOTTEN TO THAT POINT, BUT THAT WAS HIS HOPE AND HIS DREAM, AND HE INDICATED IN SPEECHES THAT WHEN WE ACHIEVE THAT WE WOULD BE A BETTER SOCIETY AND A LOT OF THE ISSUES THAT WE FIGHT ABOUT EVERYDAY WOULD NO LONGER BE A FIGHT.  WE COULD MOVE ON TO SOME MORE ISSUES THAT GOING TO AFFECT US ALL BUT RIGHT NOW WE WAS TALKING ABOUT THOSE LEFT OUT, LOCKED OUT BECAUSE OF THE COLOR OF THEIR SKIN, AND A LOT OF PEOPLE MISUNDERSTAND WHAT HE WAS SAYING AND WHAT HE WAS TALKING ABOUT.  HE WAS JUST TALKING ABOUT JUSTICE AND INEQUALITY AND HE TALKED ABOUT THIS GREAT UNITED STATES OF AMERICA'S CONSTITUTION EVERYBODY HAVE A RIGHT TO DO THIS, DO THAT, YET THAT PEOPLE OF COLOR WERE DENIED THOSE OPPORTUNITIES AND HE THOUGHT THAT SHOULD BE CLEARED UP FIRST AND WE ALL TOGETHER CAN MOVE FORWARD OPPOSED TO SOME MOVING FORWARD AND SOME BEING HELD BACK.

LET ME SAY THIS BECAUSE ONE OF THE GOALS THAT I ALWAYS HAVE MYSELF AND THE PRODUCTION TEAM FOR THE SHOW IS TO MAKE THAT WE REPRESENT EVERY ADVANTAGE POINT AND I WANT TO MAKE IT CLEAR TO THE AUDIENCE WE SEECHED HIGH AND LOW REGARDLESS OF GENDER AND RACE THAT BELIEVES THIS IS A POST RACIAL AMERICA AND I WILL REPRESENT THAT VIEWPOINT THAT IS MISSING AND I WILL CHALLENGE THE PANEL AND ASK EACH OF YOU -- FIRST OF ALL I THINK THE SECOND QUESTION FOR THE DISCUSSION IS WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE IN A POST RACIAL AMERICA?  BECAUSE MY EXPERIENCE IN AMERICA SUGGESTS IF THE POLLYANNISH THOUGHT THAT RACE IS IRRELEVANT AND EVERYONE WILL BE COLOR BLIND I DON'T THINK THAT IS A REALISTIC POSSIBILITY FOR OUR COUNTRY BECAUSE RACIAL DIFFERENCES WILL ALWAYS PLAY A FACTOR IN MY OPINION IN OUR LIVES BUT I THINK THE BETTER QUESTION IS HAVE WE REACHED A PLACE WHERE YOUR RACE IS NOT AN ABSTACKEL TO ACHIEVE YOUR DREAM, WHATEVER THAT MAYBE AND WHEN YOU PUT THAT INTO CONTEXT IN THE 50'S AND 60'S AND PEOPLE OF COLOR COULDN'T VOTE IN SOME PLACES UNTIL THE VOTING RIGHTS ACT AND WE HAVE AN AFRICAN-AMERICAN PRESIDENT TWICE ELECTED AND AFRICAN-AMERICAN AND LATINOS ARE CEO'S IN THE FUTUREUNE 500 AND THE MINORITIES ARE THRIVING IN THE UPPER ESLONG OF GOVERNMENT HOW CAN WE SAY WE'RE NOT IN A POST RACIAL AMERICA?

I AM GLAD YOU BROUGHT THAT UP.  WHEN YOU LOOK AT THE 2012 ELECTION DURING THAT TIME -- PRIOR 2011 WE HAD 35 STATES TO PUT IN SOME TYPE OF VOTER SUP RESIDENCE LAW TO PREVENT MINORITIES FROM VOTING, AND THOSE STATES THAT INSTITUTE THOSE LAWS WAS TRYING TO DENY PEOPLE ACCESS TO THE BALLOT. THERE WAS A REPORT THAT JUST CAME OUT JUSTICE WHERE PRESIDENT OBAMA'S LAWYER -- THE LAWYER WAS CHAIRMAN OF THIS COMMITTEE AND DID A STUDY OF THE THINGS I AM TALKING ABOUT AND THE LAWS AND THEY CAME BACK WITH THE CONCLUSION THAT TOO MANY IMPEDIMENTS HAD BEEN PUT IN PLACE TO DISENFRANCHISE POOR PEOPLE AND PEOPLE OF COLOR FROM VOTING AND WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT IF PEOPLE HAS GONE TO EVER COLOR WE CAN NAME AND SACRIFICE FOR THE COUNTRY AND TALK ABOU IRAQ AND AFGHANISTAN AND SAYING THE SAME THING AND THEY DIDN'T STAND IN LINE FOR 30 MINUTES TO VOTE.  THOSE ARE IMPEDIMENTS PUT IN PLACE BY PEOPLE IN POWER TO DO THIS TO MINORITY GROUPS AND THAT SAYS A LOT.  LET ME GO BACK TO THE 2013 AND THE UNITED STATES SUPREME COURT VOTED DOWN PARTS OF THE VOTING RIGHT ACT AND WE ELECTED A BLACK PRESIDENT FOR TWO TIMES AND WE NO LONGER HAVE VOTING ISSUES AND AFTER THAT TEXAS AND NORTH CAROLINA PUT IN THE MOST SUPPRESSIVE LAWS FOR VOTING IN THIS COUNTRY. JUST BECAUSE WE VOTED IN A BLACK PRESIDENT DOESN'T MEAN ALL OF THE THINGS ARE BETTER AND JUST.

WOULD YOU CALL THE ARKANSAS VOTER ID ACT --

YES.

A SUPPRESSIVE.

VERY SUPPRESSIVE.

YOU SAID THE VISION WAS PEOPLE NOT TO BE LEFT OUT AND LOCKED OUT.  HOW ARE YOU LOCKED OUT OF THE PROCESS WHEN ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS HAVE AN ID?

I AM GLAD YOU ASKED THE QUESTION.  A SIMILAR LAW WAS PASSED AND A JUDGE STRUCK IT DOWN IN PHILADELPHIA LAST WEEK AND IN ARKANSAS A STUDY CAME OUT ABOUT A MONTH AGO THAT WE RANK NUMBER ONE IN THE 50 STATES OF PEOPLE GOING TO BED HUNGRY AND IN ARKANSAS ONE OUT OF THREE CHILDREN GO TO BED HUNGRY.  WE PUT A LAW IN PLACE AND SUPPOSED TO HAVE THIS ABOUT VOTER FRAUD. [INAUDIBLE] OF VOTER FRAUD.  WE SPENT $300,000 TO IMPLEMENT THIS LAW YET WE HAVE ONE OUT OF THREE CHILDREN GOING TO BED HUNGRY EVERY NIGHT.  WE HAVE CHILDREN IN ARKANSAS THAT ON FRIDAY THEY HAVE TO GET A BACKPACK AND FOOD FOR THEM TO HAVE SOMETHING TO EAT OVER THE WEEKEND --

NO, I AM WELL AWARE OF THAT MR. CHARLES BUT HOW DOES THAT PREVENT SOMEONE FROM PARTICIPATING IN THE PROCESS BECAUSE THE ID IS FREE.

YOU CAN NOW -- THAT'S MY UNDERSTANDING AND THEY WOULDN'T HAVE IT AND NEED IT -- YEAH, IT'S FREE, BUT THAT IS PART OF THAT LAW.  THE OTHER PART OF THAT LAW IS IN THE RURAL COUNTIES IN ARKANSAS THEY MAY HAVE ONE OR TWO VOTING PRECINCTS.  IF YOU GO TO THE POLL -- WE SAW IT IN JONESBORO LAST WEEK.  IN JONESBORO THERE'S GOING TO BE A NUMBER OF VOTES THROWN OUT BECAUSE THEY WENT AND DIDN'T HAVE THE ID AND THEY HAD TO COME BACK TO THE POARL WITH THE ID IN ORDER FOR IT TO COUNT. WHY NOT LET THEM VOTE LIKE BEFORE?  SO THAT WAS A MEANS TO SUPPRESS PEOPLE'S VOTE.

LET'S MOVE ON BECAUSE WE ACTUALLY USED UP HALF OF THE TIME.  PASTOR HENDRICKS WHAT IS HAPPENING IN THE CHURCH BECAUSE WE HEARD THAT SUNDAY IS THE MOST SEGREGATED DAY IN THE WEEK?

YEAH.

ARE WE MAKING PROGRESS OR IS IT STILL THE MOST SEGREGATED DAY?

IT'S A VERY SLOW PROCESS. WE ARE SEEING ON SUNDAY MORNINGS IT'S STILL THE MOST SEGREGATED DAY OF THE WEEK AND IT'S BECAUSE GOING BACK TO OUR EARLIER QUESTION HAVE WE REACHED A POST RACIAL SOCIETY AND NO I DON'T THINK WE HAVE AND BECAUSE WE ARE DEPENDENT ON LAWS FOR YEARS WHEN WE HAVE BEEN TRYING TO LEGISLATE RACIAL RECONCILIATION SINCE THE 1800'S AND UNTIL WE BEGIN TO LEGISLATE PEOPLES' HEARTS I DON'T BELIEVE WE WILL GET TO A POST RACIAL SOCIETY BECAUSE THAT IS BUILT AROUND RELATIONSHIP AND ME UNDERSTANDING YOUR RACE, YOUR CULTURE AND UNTIL WE GET TO THAT PLACE PEOPLE WILL VOTE AND MAKE LAWS AND RULES BECAUSE THEY DON'T UNDERSTAND THE OTHER SIDE AND UNTIL YOU GET INTO COMMUNITIES, AND I BELIEVE WHAT IS THE CHURCH'S RESPONSIBILITY IS, BRING PEOPLE INTO COMMUNITY SO WE CAN EXPERIENCE COMMUNITY TOGETHER SO NOW I UNDERSTAND YOUR CULTURE.  I UNDERSTAND YOUR ETHNICITY.  I UNDERSTAND YOUR RACE SO NOW I'M GOING TO FIGHT FOR LAWS FOR YOU BECAUSE YOU'RE MY FRIEND, YOU'RE MY BROTHER IN CHRIST AND NOW I HAVE A BASIS BY WHICH I WANT TO MAKE CHANGES IN THIS COUNTRY AND BY IN LARGE THAT STILL IS NOT HAPPENING AND UNFORTUNATELY I HATE TO SAY THIS BUT I BELIEVE THE CHURCH IS STILL PART OF -- WELL LET ME SAY IT THIS WAY.  TO THIS DAY THE CHURCH IS THE ONLY REMAINING SEGREGATED INSTITUTION IN THIS COUNTRY AND THAT'S A SAD FACT AS A PASTOR TO SAY BUT IT'S TRUE AND I BELIEVE UNTIL WE, THE BODY OF CHRIST, AND THE BIBLE SAYS WE HAVE BEEN GIVEN THIS MINISTRY OF RECONCILIATION YET WE ARE STILL THE ONLY SEGREGATED INSTITUTION IN THIS COUNTRY.  I DON'T BELIEVE THIS COUNTRY WILL MOVE FORWARD UNTIL THE CONGREGATIONS BEGIN TO ADDRESS THIS ISSUE AND BY IN LARGE WE'RE STILL EITHER AFRAID OR TOO ANGRY TO ADDRESS THIS ISSUE FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF CHRIST WHICH WILL THEN GIVE THE REST OF THIS MOVING TOWARDS THAT POST RACIAL SOCIETY.  AT THIS PARTICULAR POINT IN TIME WE'RE STILL THERE I THINK WE HAVE PROBABLY IN THIS COUNTRY -- IF I KNOW THE NUMBERS CORRECTLY, PROBABLY ABOUT 12% OF THE CONGREGATIONS IN THE ENTIRE NATION WOULD BE CLASSIFIED AS A MULTI-CULTURAL CHURCH AND THAT MEANS MORE THAN 20% OF THE BODY IS ANOTHER RACE, ANOTHER ETHNIC GROUP.

WITH WHAT THE PASTOR JUST STATED IS IF THE BLUE PRINT FOR THE REST OF THE WORLD TO COME IN, AND I KNOW WHAT HE'S SAYING AND I BELIEVE THOSE STATISTICS MAYBE LOWER THAN THAT.  UNTIL THAT HAPPENS THEN NOTHING AIN'T ELSE GOING TO BE RIGHT AND HE TALKED ABOUT LAWS -- LAWS IS ONE THING BUT LEGISLATION OF THE HEART THAT HE ADDRESSED AND IF WE HAD THAT HIGH PERCENTAGE OF PEOPLE SEGREGATING THEMSELVES AND READING THE SAME BIBLE THAT EVERYBODY ELSE IS READING AND SAYING WE'RE ON THE WAY TO HEAVEN THEN THAT IN ITSELF TELL YOU WHY THE OTHER PROBLEMS  ARE LINGERING HERE SO WE HAVE A LONG WAYS TO GO AND THAT'S ABOUT THE KING SPEECH TOO.  WHAT THE PASTOR ALLUDED TO.

I WOULD ADD TO THAT CONVERSATION THAT FOR US AND MANY LATINOS WE LOOK FOR ALL OF THE LEADERSHIP OF DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING AND THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT FROM THE BLACK CHURCHES BECAUSE THE YOUTH WERE BEING TRAINED THERE IN CIVIC PARTICIPATION AND I DON'T SEE THAT MUCH FOR THE CATHOLIC COMMUNITY, ALTHOUGH THE LATINOS ARE GROWING IN THE U.S. BUT I SEE IT DIVIDED OR A VERY APPROXIMATION TO IT, NOT A ENGAGEMENT ON LET'S TRY TO CHANGE THIS AND ALTHOUGH THERE IS SUPPORT FOR THE IMMIGRANTS AND SO FORTH BUT TRAINING THE YOUTH THAT WE'RE THE ONES -- WE'RE OUT THERE WALKING THE STREETS AND WALKING THEIR LIVES I SEE THAT HISTORICALLY THAT HAS BEEN THE LEADERSHIP OF VERY SIGNIFICANT CONTRIBUTION, BUT CHANGING THE HEART IS WHAT I THINK IS AT THE CORE OF EDUCATION, AND IF I GO TO MY CORNER OF THE WORLD WHICH IS EDUCATION AND HIGHER EDUCATION WE'RE NOT PAST THE POST RACIAL SOCIETY IN TERMS WE LOOK -- FOR EXAMPLE THE  ACLU DID A SPECIAL IN THEIR MAGAZINE AND THIS MANY YEARS AFTER AND WHAT HAVE WE DONE AND MINORITIES ARE LOOKED IN THE SCHOOLS FOR DISCIPLINE AND OUT OF SCHOOL DAYS AND IF YOU LOOK AT THE LEVEL OF INCARCERATION FOR AFRICAN-AMERICANS AND LATINOS IT'S HIGHER SO THERE ARE THINGS THERE AFFECTING IT HISTORICALLY AND GROUPS THAT HAVE BEEN RACIALIZED AND THEN WE HAVE THE ACHIEVEMENT GAP.  WE HAVE THE ACT, THE LEVEL OF COLLEGE ACCESS -- YOU STILL HAVE A LONG WAY TO. DO THE QUESTION IS DO WE STILL -- IS RACE QUOTAS AND AFFIRMATIVE ACTION SPECIFICALLY THE ONLY WAY WE'RE GOING TO REMEDY THOSE INJUSTICES OR MAINTAINING THE RACE GOATAS ARE ACTUALLY CONTINUING THE RACIAL INJUSTICE OR SOMETHING OR DISCRIMINATING AGAINST OTHERS, SO MAYOR BENEFIT ONE GROUP AND INJUSTICE TO ANOTHER GROUP AND THAT IS THE CHALLENGE TO THE SUPREME COURT ON THE RACE ADMISSIONS BASED ON RACE.

THAT'S A GREAT QUESTION.  I WOULD LOVE TO HEAR YOUR THOUGHTS ON THAT PRESIDENT CHARLES.

RACIAL QUOTEACE ANDS AFFIRMATIVE ACTION PROGRAMS ARE THEY DISCRIMINATORY AGAINST THE MAJORITY.

I WOULD SAY NO.  IT'S KIND OF LIKE IF YOU PLAYING A GAME OF SPORTS AND ANTHONY HERE HAS RULES AND REGULATIONS THAT I HAVE TO COMPLY WITH, HE DOESN'T COMPLY WITH, WE'RE PLAYING THE SAME GAME.  WE HAVE LET PEOPLE STAND THE RACIAL QUOTAS AND ALL OF THAT.  IT'S MY UNDERSTANDING THAT THE QUOTAS -- PEOPLE LABEL THEM QUOTEACE.  I LABEL THEM LEVELING THE PLAYING FIELD.  IF WE ARE UNREPRESENTED AT THIS JOB AND YOU AND I HAVE THE SAME QUALIFICATIONS THEN THE SAW SAYS SINCE WE'RE UNDER REPRESENTED IN MY RACE THEN WE HAVE EQUAL QUALIFICATIONS AND IT'S A CHOICE.  THAT'S NOT A QUOTE A WE HAVE THE SAME ABILITY.  WE SCORE THE SAME ON THE TEST, COME FROM THE SAME SCHOOL, THE SAME EDUCATION STANDARDS, BUT SOMEHOW WE SCORED THE SAME AND SINCE MY RACE IS UNDER REPRESENTED THEN THE IT WOULD GO TO ME AND NOT THE OTHER PERSON.  THEN THAT'S NOT A QUOTA.  THAT IS TRYING TO BRING IT UP.  THE QUESTION IS WHY DID WE HAVE THE UNDER REPRESENTATION IN THE FIRST PLACE?  JULY 4, 1776 AND GO BACK LOOKING AT RACE AND THEN YEARS OF UNLEVEL PLAYING FIELD, SO AT SOME POINT IF YOU SAY WE'RE GOING TO BE EQUAL YOU HAVE TO TRY TO LEVEL THE PLAYING FIELD, GIVE EVERYBODY AN OPPORTUNITY.

THAT ARGUMENT HAS BEEN STRUCK DOWN BY THE SUPREME COURT WITH CASES IN TEXAS AND MICHIGAN SO THE ARGUMENT FOR THE LEVELING OF THE FIELD HAS BEEN DISCRIMINATING AGAINST SOME POOR WHITE APPLICANTS SO IT'S BEEN STRUCK DOWN.  THEN THE CONVERSATION MOVES INTO THE QUESTION OF DIVERSITY.  THAT DIVERSITY DOESN'T HAVE TO BE RACE BASE BUT THE OVERALL EXPERIENCE SO THAT ARGUMENT -- AND THE PROBLEM IN THE COURTS HOW IT'S DEFINED BY THE COURTS? I UNDERSTAND THE LEVEL OF EDUCATION -- FOR EXAMPLE IF WE THINK ABOUT EDUCATION THIS COULD BE FOR EMPLOYMENT ALSO.  IT'S A VERY DIFFICULT DECISION.  THE OTHER ONE WOULD BE TO REMEDY PAST INJUSTICES SO THAT'S KIND THE THREE ARGUMENTS OF MICHAEL SANDAL AND HIS BOOK ON JUSTICE GOING TO THOSE POINTS AND WE'RE HUNG UP ON RIGHT NOW ON THE DIVERSITY THAT DIVERSITY CONTRIBUTES TO EVERYONE'S EXPERIENCE AND SOMETIMES THE MARKET AND IT'S SHORTCOMING AND IT'S UTILITARIAN.  I COULD USE SOME OF THIS AND THIS AND WHETHER IT'S BETTER FOR A SPECIFIC COMMUNITY --

I'M GOING TO INTERRUPT YOU AND WE HAVE THREE MINUTES LEFT AND I KNOW THE TIME HAS GONE BY BECAUSE IT'S A EXCELLENT PANEL. LET'S TALK ABOUT SOLUTIONS. WHAT CAN WE DO TO MOVE THE BALL FURTHER DOWN THE FIELD TOWARD THE GOAL THAT WE AWE AGREE IN AMERICA THAT RACE ISN'T AN OBSTACLE FOR ANYONE.  IN THE RELIGIOUS COMMUNITY WHAT COULD WE DO TO BRING PEOPLE TOGETHER ON SUNDAYS.

WHAT WE'RE DOING AT MOSAIC AND IT'S NOT EASY TO BE A MULTI-ETHNIC CHURCH.  WE BRING IN DIFFERENT CULTURES, DIFFERENT WAYS WE HAVE BEEN RAISED AND WE WORK TOGETHER UNDER THE AUSPICES OF THE CROSS TO MAKE THIS WORK AND IF WE DO THAT IT STARTS WITH THOSE -- WHO HAVE COMMITTED THEMSELVES TO CHRIST AND THEREFORE HAVE COMMITTED THEIR HEARTS TO MAKE THIS THING WORK. AGAIN I DON'T THINK -- I THINK LEGISLATION IS GOOD.  WE NEEDED THAT IN THE 50'S, AND THE 60'S. WE STILL NEED IT TODAY BUT BY IN LARGE LEGISLATION IS NOT THE ANSWER TO THIS ISSUE.  IT'S A HARD ISSUE AT THE CORE AND ONLY JESUS CAN DEAL WITH THE HEART.

DOCTOR, YOU HAVE 30 SECONDS.

EDUCATION AND YOU REALIZE THERE ARE GROUPS LEFT BEHIND YOU TRY TO FIND WAYS FOR EXAMPLE OF FINDING PROGRAMS AND CAMPUS WIDE OR EDUCATION THROUGHOUT EDUCATION.  THE HISTORY OF RACISM AND EXCLUSION AND DON'T STAY THERE.  LOOK AT OTHER FORUMS AS WELL OF EXCLUSION SO YOU'RE MOVING -- YOU'RE NOT STUCK IN A RACIAL DEFINITION OF THE 60'S BUT YOU REALIZE THERE ARE MANY WAYS OF EXCLUSION TODAY AND THEY CONTINUE ON HOW NOT TO KEEP ADDING TO THOSE FORMS OF EXCLUSION.

PRESIDENT CHARLES YOU HAVE 30 SECONDS.

THIS IS TO BE USED WHAT PASTOR ANTHONY HENDRICKS JUST STATED.  IF WE COULD GET THAT DONE THE REST WILL FALL IN PLACE BECAUSE IT'S GOT TO BE WHERE HE INDICATED.  IF WE CAN ACCOMPLISH THAT ALL OF THE OTHER ISSUES WILL BE IRRELEVANT BECAUSE THEY WILL BE IN PLACE BECAUSE WE WILL SEE EACH OTHER AS OUR BROTHERS AND SISTERS AND [INAUDIBLE] ON ANOTHER SO THAT WOULD BE SOLVED. IF WE COULD DO WHAT HE TALKED ABOUT WE WOULDN'T HAVE THE OTHER ISSUES.  THEY WOULD GO AWAY.

THAT'S ABOUT ALL OF OUR TIME. I WANT TO THANK ALL OF OUR PANELISTS.  I WANT TO THANK OUR AUDIENCE FOR WATCHING.  I GUESS THE FINAL CONCOLLEGE IS WE HAVEN'T REACHED DOCTOR KING'S DREAM BUT BUT WE MADE A TREMENDOUS AMOUNT OF PROGRESS. WITH THAT WE WILL SEE YOU NEXT MONTH.
