Paint along with Kevin Hill creating a simple yet detailed mountain scene using a minimal array of colors.

HI WELCOME BACK.

TODAY WE'RE GOING TO DO ANOTHER FUN PAINTING SO LET'S GET STARTED.

THE FIRST THE G WE NEED TO DO IS COVER CANVAS WITH WHITE MEDIUM SO I WILL TAKE A CLEAN 2" BRUSH AND DIP IT IN TO A LITTLE BIT OF WHITE, AND I WILL START RIGHT DOWN HERE AND I WANT TO COAT THIS CANVAS COMPLETELY AND WE WILL BE RUNNING THE COLORS ACROSS THE TOP HERE SO YOU KNOW EXACTLY WHAT I AM USING TO PAINT.

THIS WHITES AN OIL BASED PRODUCT AND IT'S VERY THIN, AND IT'S GREAT FOR PRIMING YOUR CANVAS LIKE THIS BECAUSE IT WILL MAKE THE PAINTING GO MUCH ORE EASILY.

WE CAN BLEND COLORS THAT WILL HELP US IN THE SKY. MAYBE WE WILL HAVE WATER TODAY AND IT WILL HELP THERE TOO. YOU WILL SEE WE CAN BLEND THINGS AND MAKE THINGS LOOK VERY SOFT ON THE CANVAS.

AND I'M USING BIG X'S KIND OF OVERLAPPING STROKES HERE TO COVER IT UP.

IT'S THE EASIEST AND BEST WAY TO BLEND IT AND A LITTBIT UP HERE AND WE WILL BE DONE.

IT'S BLENDED ACROSS NICE AND EVEN.

NOW WE'RE GOING TO MIX UP A COLOR FOR THE SKY SO I WILL TAKE A LITTLE BIT OF ALIZARIN CRIMSON AND THIS IS YELLOW OCHRE.

WE WILL MIX THOSE TOGETHER AND YOU WILL SEE YOU GET KIND OF A PEACH COLOR.

NOW WE WILL LOAD UP A 2"

BRUSH WITH SOME OF THAT COLOR WE JUST MIXED AND LET'S JUST DROP IN OUR SKY. I'M GOING TO USE TINY CIRCLES. SEE THAT THE BRUSH IS MOVING IN A CIRCLE THERE.

WHAT THIS WILL DO IS GIVE US LIGHT AND DARK AREAS IN HERE AND IT WILL ALMOST LOOK LIKE CLOUDS WITHOUT DOING ANYTHING AT ALL JUST BY USING THE STROKE AND I'M ALLOWING THE SKY TO GET A LITTLE BIT LIGHTER TOWARDS THE HORIZON. THERE WE ARE, SOME TINY CIRCLES. MAYBE THERE ARE SOME HERE.

THE NEXT STEP IS TO BLEND SO I HAVE CHANGED TO A CLEAN 2"

BRUSH AND I'M GOING TO START HERE AT THE BOTTOM AND WORK UP.

NOW, I HAVE SEVERAL BRUSHES.

IF YOU ONLY HAVE ONE AND HAVE TO WASH IT IN BETWEEN STEPS THAT'S OKAY.

NOT A BIG DEAL.

NOW I'M GOING TO SHOW YOU HOW TO PAINT SOME WATER SO I WILL LOAD THE SAME BRUSH UP TO MAKE THE SKY AND I'M GOING TO PULL IN FROM THE SIDES AND I'M KEEPING THE STROKES FLAT AND THIS WILL INDICATE SOME WATER. LET THAT BLEND UP AND GET LIGHTER AS IT COMES UP TOWARDS THE HORIZON BECAUSE EVERYTHING IN A LANDSCAPE SHOULD

LIGHT WITH THE HORIZON SO I'M ADDING A LITTLE BIT OF CRIMSON TO THAT SAME COLOR AND LET'S MAKE A CLOUD HERE.

I'M GOING TO USE THE TOP CORNER OF THE BRUSH. NOW, THIS CLOUD ISN'T VERY DISTINCT.

THE ONLY REASON YOU CAN SEE IT IS BECAUSE THERE IS A SLIGHT COLOR CHANGE.

I THINK WE NEED A LITTLE CLOUD RIGHT HERE TOO, SO WE WILL JUST RUB IT IN WITH THE CORNER OF THE BRUSH. MAYBE THIS ONE ISN'T AS BIG. NOW LET'S BLEND OUT THESE CLOUDS, SO I CHANGED TO ANOTHER CLEAN 2"

BRUSH AND WE CAN COME IN HERE AND MIX UP THE BOTTOM. NOW THESE CLOUDS

ARE PRETTY SOFT.

THERE'S NOT A LOT OF PAINT HERE AND THE EDGES ARE NOT HARD OR CRISP AT ALL SO THIS DOESN'T TAKE MUCH TO BLEND THEM AND MAKE THEM SOFT SO WE WILL GO LIGHT ON THE BLENDING TODAY. NOW I WILL SHOW YOU HOW TO MAKE A MOUNTAIN.

THE FIRST STEP IS GETTING A COLOR FOR THE MOUNTAIN SO I WILL TAKE MIDNIGHT BLACK AND ALIZARIN CRIMSON AND MIX THEM TOGETHER.

THERE IS A TOUCH OF PRUSSIAN BLUE.

THAT WILL TURN THE CRIMSON INTO A PURPLE COLOR.

PULL IT OUT AND ACROSS AND MAYBE THIS MOUNTAIN -- MAYBE IT'S RIGHT THERE TODAY AND YOU CAN SEE THAT PURPLE COLOR THAT WE HAVE IN THERE.

NOW THIS MOUNTAIN IS VERY TALL AND ALSO STEEP SO THINK ABOUT THE ANGLE OF YOUR MOUNTAIN AS YOU'RE DOING IT.

DROP IT RIGHT IN.

I'M USING THIS NICE VERY -- I'M PUSHING HARD BECAUSE I WANT THAT PAINT REALLY STUCK ON THE CANVAS THERE, RE WORKED INTO THE GRAIN OF THE CANVAS HEN I DO THIS IT WON'T COME OFF.

MAYBE ADD A LITTLE BITS OF THE BLUE COLOR IN HERE.

JUST CHANGE IT UP.

WITH THE 2"

BRUSH WE CAN GRAB THIS MOUNTAIN AT THE TOP AND BLEND IT DOWN.

WHAT THIS DOES IT MAKES IT LOOK VERY SOFT KIND OF IT'S FLOATING IN THE MIST THERE, AND YOU CAN EVEN DO YOUR X'S DOWN THERE AT THE BOTTOM MAKE IT LOOK EVEN MORE MISTY.

THE NEXT STEP IS THE HIGHLIGHT, SO I WILL TAKE SOME TITANIUM WHITE AND A TOUCH OF YELLOW OCHRE, JUST ENOUGH TO WARM IT UP A LITTLE.

PULL THAT OUT AND CUT ACROSS AND LET'S JUST START RIGHT HERE AND LET IT RUN RIGHT DOWN THE MOUNTAIN. LOOK AT ALL THAT BREAKS IN THERE.

THE REASONING I AM GETTING THAT IS BECAUSE I AM APPLYING NO PRESSURE AT ALL. IT'S JUST THE WEIGHT OF THE KNIFE THAT IS DOING THE ENTIRE WORK.

ALL I'M DOING IS GUIDING IT ON THE WAY DOWN.

I REALLY LIKE THAT A LITTLE TOUCH OF YELLOW OCHRE IN THERE.

IT MAY NOT SHOW TOO MUCH BUT IF I WERE TO PUT PURE WHITE UP HERE THEN YOU WOULD NOTICE A DIFFERENCE. IT'S JUST ENOUGH AND LOOKS LIKE IT'S REFLECTING A LITTLE BIT OF THE LIGHT FROM THE SKY.

THERE WE GO.

YOU CAN HIGHLIGHT YOUR MOUNTAIN JUABOUT ANY WAY YOU WANT MAKE ALL THESE PEAKS MOVE ANYWHERE.

SEE THAT?

I BROUGHT THAT OUT, AND THIS IS A STEEP MOUNTAIN, SO THESE ANGLES ARE ALMOST VERTICAL.

OKAY.

LET'S DO A LITTLE ON THIS ONE RIGHT HERE.

THIS ONE IS NOT QUITE AS STEEP.

NOW, I'M WIPING MY KNIFE ON MY PALLET BEFORE I RELOAD BECAUSE I AM PICKING UP A LITTLE BIT OF PURPLE, AND MAYBE LET'S HAVE A LITTLE BIT OF HIGHLIGHT BACK HERE.

NOW, WE'RE GOING TO MIX UP A COLOR FOR THE SHADOW SO THERE'S A LITTLE BIT OF TITANIUM WHITE AND SOME PRUSSIAN BLUE. ADD THE BLUE SLOWLY BECAUSE IT'S REALLY STRONG AND THERE IS MIDNIGHT BLACK AND GRAY IT DOWN A LITTLE, MAYBE A LITTLE MORE BLUE.

MIX THAT UP.

PULL IT OUT.

CUT ACROSS TO LOAD A LITTLE BIT OF PAINT OUT ON THE TIP.

WITH THAT BLUE AND WHITE WE CAN ADD IN SOME SHADOWS, AND MAYBE WE WANT ONE UP HERE. REALLY PICK OUT WHERE YOU THINK THEY WOULD BE AND DROP THEM IN. TURN THE KNIFE, USE THE POINT AND GET IN THAT A LITTLE AREA UP THERE.

THIS DOESN'T TAKE MUCH PRESSURE.

THIS IS JUST LIKE THE HIGHLIGHT.

YOU WANT TO BE VERY DELICATE WITH THIS.

VERY, VERY EASY TO PUSH TOO HARD.

LET THAT SHADOW RUN DOWN THE OTHER SIDE AND DON'T BE AFRAID TO LEAVE AREAS WHERE THIS BACKGROUND COLOR SHOWS THROUGH.

YOU CAN SKIP AREAS IF YOU WANT TO AND LOAD UP THE SMALL SIDE OF THE KNIFE SO YOU CAN GET INTO THESE LITTLE AREAS.

HAVE A LITTLE BIT OF THE SHADOW RIGHT UP IN THERE. AS LONG AS YOU'RE VERY LIGHT YOU CAN MAKE ALL THESE NICE THINGS HAPPEN AND WE WANT A LITTLE BIT RIGHT IN HERE.

BACK TO THE LARGE SIDE OF THE KNIFE AND THERE.

NOW, WE'RE GOING TO MIST OUT THE BASE OF THE MOUNTAIN, SO I WILL TAKE A CLEAN 2"

BRUSH AND VERY LIGHTLY I'M GOING TO BRUSH UP.

TOUCH IT DOWN THE BOTTOM AND THEN LIFT IT UP. YOU CAN COME 2-3 INCHES OFF THE MOUNTAIN AND LIFT YOUR BRUSH OFF THE CANVAS.

THAT WAY YOU DON'T GO TOO HIGH.

YOU DON'T WANT TO LOSE IT ALL.

OCCASIONALLY CAN YOU TAP LIKE THIS IF YOU WANT TO BREAK UP ANY AREAS THAT ARE THICK AND IN FACT LET'S MIST THIS OUT IN HERE -- IN FACT I WILL DO IT RIGHT NOW.

I WILL SHOW YOU HOW TO ADD A LITTLE SOMETHING HERE.

THERE IT GOES. AND WHAT THIS IS GO GOING TO BE LIKE AN EXTRA LAYER TO THE MOUNTAIN.

JUST DROP IT RIGHT IN.

THERE IT GOES.

THIS WILL GIVE YOU DEPTH TO YOUR MOUNTAIN. THE MORE OF THESE THINGS YOU CAN ADD IN THE MORE DETAIL IT WILL LOOK.

OKAY.

AND EVERY RIDGE NEEDS A SHADOW SO DROP A SHADOW IN.

IT'S THAT EASY.

MAYBE EVEN WRAP AROUNDS.

YOU CAN DO THAT WITH THE SMALL SIDE OF THE KNIFE AND GET IN THAT TIGHT AREA. THERE IS A LITTLE BIT OF SHADOW RIGHT THERE.

SET THE KNIFE DOWN AND GO BACK TO THE BRUSH AND WE WILL BLEND IT MAKE IT LOOK MISTY, JUST DISAPPEARS DOWN HERE.

THERE YOU GO.

JUST TAKES 2-3 SECONDS AND YOU CAN DROP IN A TOTALLY NEW LAYER.

THE NEXT THING WE'RE GOING TO DO IS PAINT IN SOME BACKGROUND EVERGREEN TREES SO I WILL TAKE A FAN BRUSH AND PULL IT THROUGH A LITTLE BIT OF MIDNIGHT BLACK, AND THERE'S THE BASE COLOR TO THE MOUNTAIN, AND A TOUCH OF WHITE TO LIGHTEN IT UP.

OKAY.

NOW, JUST PICK OUT AREAS AND START DROPPING THEM IN.

I'M GOING TO USE ONLY THE TOP CORNER OF THE BRUSH. WITH THE HANDLE UP.

IF YOU USE THE WHOLE BRUSH IT WON'T LOOK AS GOOD.

IT WILL LOOK LIKE A RUBBER STAMP.

INSTEAD JUST USE THE TOP.

IT WORKS BETTER, AND MAYBE WE WILL HAVE A LOT OF TREES BACK IN HERE.

SOME OF THEM WILL BE COVERED BUT A LOT EVLL UP.

YOU SEE THAT?

YOU GET LITTLE TREES.

THERE'S A FEW LARGER ONES.

OKAY.

LO THERE'S SOME.

LOOK AT THAT MISTY LAYER I'M GOING TO LEAVE IN HERE.

NOW DON'T GET THE SPACING EVEN HERE.

MAKE THE TREES ALL DIFFERENT HEIGHTS. YOU DON'T WANT TO COME IN HERE AND DO THIS BECAUSE THAT DOESN'T LOOK LIKE A TREE LINE.

IT LOOKS MORE LIKE A FENCE, SO BE REALLY LOOSE, MAKE ALL DIFFERENT SHAPEA REALLY LOOK LIKE MORE OF A TREE EVERGREEN TREES ESPECIALLY AND A

T ON THESE TREES

I WILL LOAD UP THE FAN BRUSH OF THAT BLACK ANA LITTA LITTLE BIT DARKER BECAUSE AS YOU ONE RIGHT HERE SO WE WILL JUST TOUCH WORK THAT BRUSH BACK AND FORTH. THAT ONE HAS A BEND IN THEM. IT'S CROOKED.

I LIKE THAT AND WE WILL HAVE THE BANK COME OFF LIKE THAT. WE WILL PUT SOME SNOW IN THERE.

NOW MAYBE WE WANT A BIGGER TREE RIGHT HERE.

WE WILL WORK THAT BACK AND FORTH.

NOW, MAYBE ON THIS TREE I WILL SHOW YOU HOW NOT TO DO IT.

I WILL MAKE IT SMALL SO I CAN FIX IT. I SEEN SO MANY PEOPLE AND THIS IS WHAT THEY DO AND THEY CALL THAT THEIR EVERGREEN TREE AND YOU USE THE WHOLE BRUSH AND IT LOOKS LIKE A RUBBER STAMP AND INSTEAD PICK A CORNER AND DOESN'T MATTER WHICH ONE BUT USE IT AND SHAPE YOUR LIMBS.

SEE THAT.

ALL OF THE THINGS HAPPENING IN THERE.

IT'S VERY, VERY ROUGH BECAUSE EVERGREENS THEY'RE NOT PERFECT AT ALL. THEY HAVE LIMBS GOING IN ALL SORTS OF DIRECTIONS.

LOOK AT THAT. THAT WAS

KIND OF NEAT. I LIKE THAT. NOW WE'RE GOING TO DO SOME REFLECTIONS AND HAVE THE 2" BRUSH AND THAT IS NOT ENOUGH PAINT AND INSTEAD I'M GOING TO ADD SOME TO THE BRUSH, SOME COLOR, AND WE WILL PULL STRAIGHT DOWN.

ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS PULL DOWN FOR REFLECTIONS.

ALL RIGHT.

THERE'S A LITTLE RIGHT HERE.

JUST PULL THEM DOWN. WE'RE NOT BEING TOO DETAILED HERE.

JUST THE MASS AREAS. THIS IS PRETTY DARK BECAUSE THOSE TREES ARE DARK.

I'M GOING TO WIPE THE BRUSH OFF ON A PAPER TOWEL AND LIGHTLY GO ACROSS JUST ENOUGH TO SOFTEN IT, BLEND IT A LITTLE.

YOU SEE THAT LITTLE THING RIGHT THERE?

I'M GOING TO SHOW YOU HOW TO FIX IT.

I THINK THAT WAS A GLOB OF PAINT.

I'M NOT SURE.

I WILL REMOVE WHAT I CAN WITH THE KNIFE AND LET'S CECIL GRAB A 1 " BRUSH AND VERY LIGHTLY WORK THAT AND THAT'S ALL IT TAKES TO FIX IT.

I HAVE LOADED A FAN BRUSH WITH SOME PURE TITANIUM WHITE AND I'M GOING TO SHOW YOU HOW TO ADD THE SNOW.

I AM JUST PULLING TO ONE SIDE.

SEE THAT.

DROP IN ALL THOSE SNOW BANKS.

NOW BECAUSE WE'RE WORKING AND THIS WHOLE PAINTING IS WET YOU WILL PICK UP SOME OF THE PURPLE AND THAT'S GOOD.

DON'T FIGHT T IT WON'T BE PURE WHITE AND I LIKE THAT A LOT.

SEE YOU HAVE SHADOWS BUILT IN AND ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS PULL AND YOU CAN BRING THINGS OUT LIKE THAT JUST TO CHANGE UP THE SHORELINE.

OKAY.

RELOAD. AND WE WILL DO THIS ONE RIGHT HERE.

JUST PULL IT IN AND I AM KNOCKING SOME OF THE DIRTY COLOR OFF ON MY PALLET JUST SO I DON'T CONTAMINATE MY WHITE.

THERE'S A GOOD ONE RIGHT THERE.

BIG SNOW DRIFT.

NOW I'M GOING TO SHOW YOU HOW TO MAKE ONE MORE TREE. I WILL RELOAD THAT BRUSH WITH A LOT OF GOOD DARK COLOR, MOSTLY THAT BLACK, AND OKAY ARE YOU READY FOR IT?

THERE IT IS. IT'S PRETTY SCARY.

THAT'S OKAY. WE NEED IT SO WE WILL WORK THE FAN BRUSH BACK AND FORTH.

BE BRAVE AND JUST STICK IT IN. YOU WILL FINTHAT YOU HAVE A LOT OF FUN WHEN YOU DO THAT. THERE WE GO RIGHT OVER THE MOUNTAIN. THIS STUFF IS GOING TO

FRAME THE PAINTING IN AND LOOK AT THE CENTER. FORM ALL OF THE LIMES

-- LIMBS AND IT'S DARK AND I I WILL SHOW YOU SNOW HIGHLIGHTS AND MAKE A PIECE OF LAND, A PENINSULA, SOMETHING LIKE THAT. I THINK WE NEED ONE MORE LITTLE TREE.

I MISSED A SPOT HERE WE WILL DROP IT IN.

AFTERE ONE ON THE RIGHT HERE THIS ONE SHOULD BE NO TROUBLE AT ALL. D ERE WE GO.

ALL RIGHT. SET THE KNIFE

UP THE FAN BRUSH AND WE WILL LOAD IT UP WITH SOME WHITE, AND LET'S SEE. MAYBE THIS ONE RIGHT HERE.

WE WILL START WITH HIM.

DROP ON A LITTLE BIT OF SNOW, SOME HIGHLIGHTS.

THAT'S VERY DARK DOWN IN THERE.

DON'T HIGHLIGHT ARE BOTTOM.

LEAVE O HIGHLIGHT THE WHOLE THING SOLID. OKAY.

THERE'S SOME ON THIS ONE TOO.

THERE.

THESE TREE TRUNKS AREN'T TOO BAD BUT IF YOURS ARE TOO DISTINCT IN SOME AREAS PUT A GHT ON THEM AND IT WILL PUSH THEM RIGHT BACK.

VERY EASY TO CORRECT.

AND YOU CAN SEE I'M NOT LOADING A TON OF PAINT ON THIS BRUSH BECAUSE I WANT IT TO PICK UP THIS COLOR AND MAKE IT A LITTLE DIRTY BECAUSE THE TREES AREN'T THE CLOSEST SO I DON'T TH WE LESS AND LESS HIGHLIGHT DOWN THERE.

SO WHEN YOU'RE HIGHLIGHTING THE TREES IN THE BACKGROUND NOT TOO MUCH PAINT ON THE BRUSH.

THAT BIG ONE OVER THERE ALL RIGHT VERY DISTINCT. OKAY.

AND A LITTLE BIT ON THIS ONE.

NOW WE WILL PICK UP A LITTLE MORE PAINT AND LET'S DO THIS ONE.

THE HIGHLIGHTS ON THIS TREE SHOULD BE A LITTLE BIT BRIGHTER.

THAT MAY MEAN ADDING A LITTLE MORE WHITE MEDIUM TO THAT COLOR SO THAT WAY IT WILL STICK ON A LITTLE CLEANER. THERE WE GO.

LOAT ALL THE DARK I AMLEAVING IN THIS TREE. THAT IS VERY IMPORTANT. WITHOUT THAT DARK IT REALLY LOOK FLAT. IT REALLY WILL AND I WANT A LOT OF DEPTH IN MY TREE.

WITH A GREEN KNIFE WE CAN COME IN HERE AND SCRATCH THROUGH THE PAINT LETTING A LITTLE BIT OF THE CANVAS SHOW THROUGH.

THAT'S ENOUGH OF THAT.

PICK UP A LITTLE BIT OF WHITE ON THE KNIFE AND HERE WE GO.

WE'RE GOING TO SCRATCH IN SOME HIGHLIGHTS IN THE WATERTHESE SHOULD BE AS FLAT AS YOU CAN GET THEM.

TRY TO KEEP THEM VERY FLAT AND HERE'S SOME RIGHT HERE.

THIS MAKES THE WATER LOOK A LITTLE MORE WET.

NOW EVERY ONCE IN A WHILE I LIKE TO STEP BACK AND SEE IF THERE IS ANYTHING I WANT TO ADD OR CHANGE.

NOW THEY HAVE LOOKED AT OUR PARTICIPATING I SEE A COUPLE OF THINGS I WANT TO CHANGE.

NUMBER ONE, I WANT TO MAKE THIS TREE A LITTLE BIT TALLER.

I THINK IT WOULD FRAME OUT THE PAINTING NICER AND IT'S EASY AND TAP IT IN AND HIGHLIGHT IT LATER.

THE SECOND THING I WANT TO ADD A COUPLE OF WATER LINES OUT HERE.

SEE THESE WATER LINES WILL MAKE THE WATER LOOK WET EVEN OUT HERE IN THE CENTER WHICH IS WHAT I

IT TO BE. NOW, WE WILL PUT SOME A HIGHLIGHT BACK ON THIS TREE. WE TOOK IT ALL WHEN WE ERASE TODAY D MAKE IT BIGGER.

ALL RIGHT I THINK WE BALANCED THE PAINTINETTY WELL.

WE HAVE A NICE COMPOSITION AND IT WORKS .

ALL WE HAVE TO DO IS N IT.

I THINNED THIS PAINT DOWN ANDPT LINER SO IT FLOWS OFF EASILY.

I HAD A LOT OF FUN.

I HOPE YOU DID TOO.

TUNE IN NEXT TIME AND WE WILL DO ANOTHER GREAT PAINTING TOGETHER AND THANKS FOR WATCHING.
