2012 Little Rock Film Festival YOUTH Info

The Little Rock Film Festival YOUTH! event on June 2-3, 2012 is quickly approaching! Now in its sixth year, LRFF YOUTH! is sure to be a great experience for novice and experienced youth filmmakers alike. On Saturday June 2nd, we will begin our weekend-long event, including the following:

Workshop series with film professionals including but not limited to topics such as producing, directing, special effects make-up and how to use music to enhance your project plus much more!

Courtney Pledger - Producer
Producer for a number of films and television in both North America and the U.K., including films such as Cirque du Freak, and Box of Delights.  Note! Media educators, Courtney is an Arkansas resident and someone you will want to meet. She is an incredible resource for media educators in Arkansas.

Graham Gordy - Screenwriter
Screenwriter for various feature films, Best known for his work on "The Love Guru", and "War Eagle, Arkansas" Graham Gordy is an Arkansas-based screenwriter whose work history has included a variety of short and feature-length films, as well as journalism.

Joel C. High - Music Supervisor
Music supervisor and producer for over 100 films and television projects including all of Tyler Perry's films including Diary of a Mad Black Woman, Madea Goes to Jail, and  I Can Do Bad All by Myself.
You might remember this session was planned for last year but Joel's flight was delayed and he had to cancel. He is, however, very excited to be with us this year, no ifs, ands or buts!

Les Galusha - Special Effects make-up (demonstration)
Les is a special effects make-up artist. He has been involved in recent short films such as Pillow and Seven Souls. This is THE workshop if you want to learn how to create scars, make blood squirt out of a vein or make your first zombie movie!

In addition to the general workshops, more advanced students can work in a group side-by-side with a team of professionals on a completely hands-on experiential script-to-screen project. 

Starting with a script written specifically for this workshop by Graham Gordy, students will attend a morning production meeting on Saturday with the film's director, director of photography (DP), art department and lighting director.  Next, students will work alongside the professional filmmakers to set the stage for the scene with the art department, light the scene with the lighting department, and tweak the setting and lighting to create the right mood for the scene with the director of photography.  Students will continue their day with the director and professional actors eventually shooting the scene.  This is a Not-To-Be-Missed Opportunity to work with Arkansas's most sought after independent filmmakers.  Participating filmmakers are:

Daniel Campbell - Director
Winner of the past two Little Rock Film Festival  “Best in Arkansas” awards for his films Antiquities and The Orderly,  respectively,  this young director and writer has been making his mark on Arkansas independent film community.

Gabe Mayhan - Director of Photography
An award winning cinematographer --- Over the last three years Gabe has shot over 15 narrative and documentary films. Namely, L7 - a short film directed by Ammon Abbasi - an official selection of the 2011 Cannes Film Festival, screening at Critics Week; Pillow - a short film directed by The Miller Brothers - an official selection in over 25 film festival and winner of multiple awards including Best Cinematography at both Beverly Hills Film Festival and Rhode Island Film Festival.

Mitchell Crisp - Art Department
Mitchell Crisp was born in Dallas, Texas, but has lived her life all over the country, moving from New York to Little Rock in 2002.  Her mother and grandmother's work hang in national Museums, so she considers art sort of the "family business." Her work shows nationally, but sells primarily into private collections in New York and Los Angeles. Her paintings have appeared in script specific roles on NBC's "Law and Order" and on sets of many films. She paints to support her filmmaking obsession, in which she is known as "Mitchell Patterson."

Bob and Amy Sandefur
Bob and Amy Sandefur, a television/film production team and married couple with 25 years experience in both endeavors. With a client list including History Channel, Learning Channel, Discovery, HBO, ESPN, AETN, all the major networks and a bit of feature film work, their diverse work history has carried them around the world.

Graham Gordy - Screenwriter
Best known for his work on The Love Guru, Graham Gordy is an Arkansas-based screenwriter whose work history has included a variety of short and feature-length films, as well as journalism.

Screenings will be held featuring debut screenings of this year's Student Selects: A Young Filmmakers' Showcase winners, as well as announcements of the 2012 THEA Foundation Young Filmmaker Scholarship recipients! Attending students will also receive festival passes, t-shirts and swag-bags!

During the Saturday, June 2nd event, a complimentary lunch will be provided for attendees.

Hotel options for those of you needing to spend the night in Little Rock are the Wyndham (North Little Rock - RiverMarket District) is 49.00 per night, the Peabody Hotel is 100 per night, Crowne Plaza in West Little Rock (not within walking distance at all) is 50 per night. The Peabody only has a few rooms so I can't promise their availability -- if you run into problems please let me know.

2011 Little Rock Film Festival YOUTH!

This year the Little Rock Film Festival and AETN mark five years of collaboration in a shared mission to encourage and acknowledge Arkansas youth working in the art of digital storytelling. Together with our partners the THEA Foundation, the Arkansas Film Commission and PBS/Adobe Youth Voices we present industry related workshops, screenings, awards and scholarships to celebrate and support our youngest filmmakers’ talent and stories.

2011 LRFF Youth! under the direction of LRFF’s Education and Youth Coordinator and AETN Producer Casey Sanders, presents workshop opportunities to youth that explore the art and craft of filmmaking. LRFF Youth Filmmaking Panels includes workshop panels and screenings perfect for young filmmakers of any age and skill level.

LRFF Youth workshops are a time for students to experience directing,
shooting, lighting, editing, as well as music video production sessions from industry professionals
