Enjoying the peaceful tranquility at Bard Springs National Recreation Area in the Ouachita National Forest; checking out some classic cars at the Four States Auto Museum in Texarkana; visiting the barbershop where Elvis got his GI haircut; and having a Moon Pie at a restored 1930s country store south of Heber Springs – it’s all coming up in a brand new episode of “Exploring Arkansas” Wednesday, April 4, at 6:30 p.m.

If you’re looking for a secluded area that’s visited by only few folks, then Bard Springs north of Athens is your destination. This is one of those National Forest Recreation Areas that was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) back during the 1930s. In the summertime, you can enjoy the swimming hole here but, if you happen to come in the winter (like we did), and it’s cold enough, then you can experience a nearly frozen waterfall.

Exploring Arkansas Four States Auto Museum

The Four States Auto Museum in Texarkana spans 100 years of automotive history. The early 1900s building itself looks like a period repair shop/garage. Here you’ll find everything from a Model T and Model A to the classic cars of the 1960s.

Exploring Arkansas Fort Chaffee Barbershop Museum

It was “the haircut heard ‘round the world” March 24, 1958, when Elvis Presley stepped in the barbershop at Fort Chaffee and got his famous G.I. buzz cut. That barbershop is now the Chaffee Barbershop Museum in a restored area called the Chaffee Crossing Historic District. See WWII history for yourself here, and experience one of the biggest pop culture events in history of a “hunka-hunka burnin’ love.”

Muse’s Country Store

The sign out front at Muse’s Country Store south of Heber Springs says, “Come share a Memory.”  And that’s what folks have been doing here ever since Scott and Elizabeth Muse restored this circa 1937 store about a year or so ago. Another sign reads, “Guns-Gas-Groceries,” and, yep, it’s all here and then some! So, stop in, have a cold soda and a snack, and share your own memory of a bygone era. Check it out in our latest episode April 4 at 6:30 p.m. on AETN.
