The Arkansas Educational Television Network, 350 S. Donaghey Ave., Conway, will host a community blood drive with Arkansas Blood Institute Monday, May 14, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Donors will receive one free ticket to Wild River Country and a "Give Local" T-shirt.
Healthy individuals age 16 or older may donate. Anyone under age 18 must weigh at least 125 pounds, and 16-year-olds must provide signed parental permission. Anyone age 18 or older must weigh at least 110 pounds.
All blood types are needed, and those with O-negative type blood are especially encouraged to donate. According to the American Association of Blood Banks, individuals with O-negative blood type make up only nine percent of the national population. However, O-negative blood can be used by anyone in an emergency situation when a patient's blood type has not yet been identified.
Appointments are not necessary but can be made by going to the Arkansas Blood Institute website at https://obi.org/ and selecting the "Find a Blood Drive" button.
The Arkansas Blood Institute exclusively supplies blood for patients in 31 Arkansas hospitals, including the Arkansas Baptist Hospital in Conway and Conway Regional, accounting for 95 percent of all transfused blood in Little Rock and 100 percent in Conway.
