The HIV/AIDS quarterly report published by the Arkansas Department of Health on June 30, 2011 showed that a cumulative total of 8,018 cases of HIV/AIDS had been reported in the state since 1983. Of that number, 4,503 cases met the AIDS definition and 2,439 had died.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, at the end of 2008, an estimated 1,178,350 persons in the U.S. were living with HIV/AIDS, with an estimated 50,000 additional cases diagnosed each year.
