Between the Bytes With Mary Kate: Exclusive Interviews

As you guys know, I’m minoring in journalism so, when I discovered that PBS Digital Studios sponsored the YouTube channel “Blank on Blank,” I was literally ecstatic. “Blank on Blank” is a series of animated videos of actual interviews done with writers, musicians, presidents, actors and American icons of the 20th century on issues timely to what is going on in the world. As a future American journalist, I will have to interview people and, nerd that I am, study interviewing techniques. Learning from the techniques of writers and journalists who interviewed the greats from Ronald Reagan to Kurt Cobain and Gene Wilder is a one of a kind experience.

Now, studying interviewing techniques and what questions to ask important people is all well and good … but, when I discovered “Blank on Blank” had a whole section of their channel devoted to the great writers of the 20th century, my English major side all out fan girl-ed.

As I scrolled through their videos, my eyes were popping out of my head when I saw interviews with legends like Kurt Vonnegut, Hunter S. Thompson and Ray Bradbury. These were names of writers that I knew and loved! Hearing their interviews was almost as good as meeting them in person. These writers inspired me from middle school all the way, now, to my senior year of college. Whether it be through Bradbury’s intense short stories or Vonnegut’s travels to planet Tralfamadore, these writers took me out of my comfort zone and into new worlds.

Through their interviews, “Blank on Blank” was able to show me a new side of these writers and give me a new perspective on their works. Now, if I could just find a signed copy of “Slaughterhouse V,” then life would be complete …

So, check out “Blank on Blank” through PBS Digital Studios and let your inner fan girl, boy or whoever out with interviews of greats like Meryl Streep and John Lennon, or whoever floats your boat! Also don’t forget to stay tuned and read more Between the Bytes with me, Mary Kate, posting every Thursday!
